Hendrik Mesdag
Hendrik Willem Mesdag (23 February 1831 – 10 July 1915) was a Dutch marine painter. Biography He was born in Groningen, the son of the banker Klaas Mesdag and his wife Johanna Wilhelmina van Giffen. Mesdag was encouraged by his father, an amateur painter, to study art. He married Sina van Houten in 1856, and when they inherited a fortune from her father, Mesdag retired from banking at the age of 35 to pursue a career as a painter. He studied in Brussels with Willem Roelofs and in 1868 moved to The Hague to paint the sea. In 1870 he exhibited at the Paris Salon and won the gold medal for ''The Breakers of the North Sea''. In 1880 he received a commission from a Belgian company to paint a panorama giving a view over the village of Scheveningen on the North Sea coast near The Hague. Hendrik Haverman
Hendrik Johannes Haverman (23 October 1857, Amsterdam - 11 August 1928, The Hague) was a Dutch artist; known primarily for his portrait drawings. Biography He studied at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam, and the art academies in Antwerp and Brussels. Among those he studied with were August Allebé and Hendrik Valkenburg (1826-1896). In his turn, he gave private lessons to Edmée Broers (1876-1955), , Maria Adeline Alice Schweistal (1864-1950) and Pauline Suij; at a time when women were not admitted to the Rijksakademie. In 1892, he was awarded a Royal Subsidy to sustain his work. The 1901 edition of ', by Nicolaas Beets, contains a portrait of the author by Haverman. He was also an art critic and wrote numerous articles for ''De Gids'', the oldest Dutch literary journal. In 1918, there was a major retrospective of his works at the Pulchri Studio in The Hague. The Mesdag Collection
The Mesdag Collection is an art museum in The Hague, Netherlands. It is managed by the Van Gogh Museum. The museum is housed next to the former house of the Dutch painter Hendrik Willem Mesdag and shows the art Mesdag and his wife Sina van Houten collected from 1866 to 1903. It features work of the painters of the Hague School like Willem Roelofs and Anton Mauve and work of the French Barbizon School (Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, Théodore Rousseau, Jean-François Millet, Charles-François Daubigny and Eugène Delacroix and paintings of Lawrence Alma-Tadema. There is also a large collection of Japanese art and Japanese craftwork (pottery) on show. This all is shown in a typical 19th-century setting. The museum was closed for renovation until Spring 2011. Hague School
The Hague School is a group of artists who lived and worked in The Hague between 1860 and 1890. Their work was heavily influenced by the Realism (visual arts), realist painters of the French Barbizon school. The painters of the Hague school generally made use of relatively somber colors, which is why the Hague School is sometimes called the ''Gray School''. Precursors After the great periods of Dutch art in the Dutch Golden Age painting, Golden Age of the 17th century, there were economic and political problems which diminished activity in art. The fine arts in the Netherlands enjoyed a revival around 1830, a time now referred to as the Romanticism, Romantic period in Dutch painting.
