Henckell Christian
Henckell Lochinvar Christian MBE (1910 – 1998) was a Dominican politician from the Dominica Labour Party. Christian studied studied sociology at London University. He worked as a teacher and later as a social worker. Christian was elected to the House of Assembly of Dominica in 1970 and 1975. He was minister of education and health in 1970s in the cabinet of Edward Oliver LeBlanc. Patrick John appointed him as the Deputy Premier in 1975, and Christian continued as the Deputy Prime Minister since independence in November 1978. House Of Assembly Of Dominica
The House of Assembly is the legislature of Dominica. It is established by Chapter III of the Constitution of Dominica, and together with the President of Dominica constitutes Dominica's Parliament. The House is unicameral, and consists of twenty-one Representatives, nine senators, and the Attorney General as an '' ex officio'' member. The Speaker of the House becomes the thirty-second member if chosen from outside the membership of the House. Representatives are directly elected in single-member constituencies using the simple-majority (or first-past-the-post) system for a term of five years. The Representatives in turn decide whether the senators are to be elected by their vote, or appointed. Sir Louis Cools-Lartigue, OBE (18 January 1905 – 21 August 1993) was a Dominican politician. Biography Until 1955, Cools-Lartigue was the Chief Secretary of the Windward Islands, when on 9 May he was issued a Commission by George F. Holsten appointing him to the position of Governor's Deputy. From November 1967 to 3 November 1978, Cools-Lartigue was the last Governor of Dominica. He was then elected Interim President and served as such from 3 November 1978 to 19 January 1979, until Fred Degazon was elected President of Dominica. Edward Oliver LeBlanc
Edward Oliver Le Blanc (October 3, 1923 – October 29, 2004) was a Dominican politician. He served as the chief minister of Dominica from January 1961 to March 1, 1967 and as the first premier of Dominica. Life and career Le Blanc was born in Vieille Case. He joined the Dominica Labour Party in 1957. He joined the government of the Federation of the West Indies in Trinidad in 1958, but returned to Dominica later to become the leader of his party. He won a seat in the House of Assembly in 1961. Le Blanc served as chief minister of Dominica from January 1961 to March 1, 1967. In March 1967, when the British granted Dominica more self-government, Le Blanc became premier. Patrick John
Patrick Roland John (7 January 1938 – 6 July 2021) was the first Prime Minister of Dominica as well as its last Premier. He led Dominica to independence from the United Kingdom. He was leader of the Waterfront and Allied Workers' Union and mayor of Roseau before being elected to the legislature in 1970. He became Premier in 1974 following the resignation of Edward Oliver LeBlanc. After mass protest forced him to resign, John unsuccessfully attempted in 1981 to overthrow the government of Prime Minister Eugenia Charles with the backing of white supremacist groups (in what became dubbed "Operation Red Dog"). As a result, he was jailed for twelve years, of which he served five years. On 6 July 2021, John died at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital in Roseau, Dominica, at the age of 83. The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service.
