Hejnum
Hejnum is a populated area, a socken (not to be confused with parish), on the Swedish island of Gotland. It comprises the same area as the administrative Hejnum District, established on 1January 2016. Geography Hejnum is situated in the northern inland of Gotland just south of Lake Tingstäde. Central Hejnum consists of flat farmlands with forest area in the west and east. The medieval Hejnum Church is situated in the socken. , Hejnum Church belongs to Väskinde parish in Norra Gotlands pastorat, along with the churches in Väskinde, Fole, Lokrume, Bro and Bäl. Hejnum Church
Hejnum Church ( sv, Hejnums kyrka) is a medieval Lutheran church in Hejnum on the island of Gotland, Sweden. The church lies in the Diocese of Visby of the Church of Sweden. History The Romanesque tower is the oldest part of Hejnum Church. It originally formed part of a Romanesque church, but the nave and choir were replaced during the mid-13th century by the presently visible, more Gothic parts. Remains of the original church were discovered during an excavation in 1914. A runic inscription above the western portal of the tower bears the inscription "Botvid master mason". The church remains largely unchanged since the Middle Ages and underwent a renovation in 1960 under the direction of architect Olle Karth (1905-1965). Gutnish Language
Gutnish ( ), or rarely Gutnic ( sv, gutniska or ), refers to the original language spoken on parts of the islands of Gotland and Fårö. The different dialects of Gutnish, while stemming from the Old Gutnish ( sv, Forngutniska) variety of Old Norse, are sometimes considered part of modern Swedish. Lake Tingstäde
Lake Tingstäde is a lake next to Tingstäde in the central northern part of Gotland, Sweden. It is the second biggest lake on Gotland, after Lake Bästeträsk. The surface of the lake is above sea level. The lake was used as a landing site for seaplanes during the interwar period, such as the first regular passenger planes between Gotland and mainland Sweden 1933–39, and a stopover on the Stockholm/Lindarängen - Danzig line, serviced by the AB Aerotransport in 1925–26. History During the 1120s, a square timber platform was built in the middle of the lake. On the platform was a number of closely built wooden houses. The remnants of this construction, known as the Bulverket, are still present on the bottom of the lake. It is still not known why the bulwark was built.
