Heiligenberg Tunnel
The Heiligenberg Tunnel is the longest of a total of twelve tunnels on the Mannheim-Saarbrücken railway and the longest in the Palatinate. The tunnel crosses the Palatine Watershed in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. It was originally built for a single track, but a second track was built a few years later. Location The tunnel is located in the northwest of the Palatine Forest (''Pfälzerwald''). It is located mainly on the urban area of Kaiserslautern; the smaller, eastern part is in Hochspeyer. The tunnel passes through the Heiligenberg mountain without a curve. History The Bavarian King Ludwig I approved the construction of a main line railway running east-west from Rheinschanze to Bexbach on 21 December 1837. Between Hochspeyer and Kaiserslautern numerous hills and mountains had to be overcome. Paul Camille Von Denis
Paul Camille Denis, later von Denis, (28 June 1796 – 3 September 1872) was an engineer, railway pioneer and participant in the Hambach Festival, the German political protest of 1832. Denis was born at Château des Saales in Montier-en-Der, in the Département of Haute-Marne, France. He grew up as a child of the Mainz city councillor, Peter Denis, and attended the Lyceum Louis le Grand in Paris. In 1814 and 1815 he studied at the École Polytechnique in Paris. After the conclusion of his studies he returned to the Palatinate to his father who had since settled at Neustadt. Initially employed as a trainee by the Bavarian state - to which the Palatinate then belonged - from 3 March 1816 he worked as a construction overseer (''Baukondukteur'') in Germersheim. A loading gauge is a diagram or physical structure that defines the maximum height and width dimensions in railway vehicles and their loads. Their purpose is to ensure that rail vehicles can pass safely through tunnels and under bridges, and keep clear of platforms, trackside buildings and structures. Frankenstein (Pfalz) Station
Frankenstein (Pfalz) station is the station of the town of Frankenstein in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. Deutsche Bahn classifies it as a category 6 station and it has two platforms. It is located on the Mannheim–Saarbrücken railway, which essentially consists of the Palatine Ludwig Railway (''Pfälzische Ludwigsbahn'', Ludwigshafen–Bexbach). It was opened on 2 December 1848 with the Kaiserslautern–Frankenstein section of the Ludwig Railway. On 25 August of the following year, the gap to Neustadt was closed, so that the Ludwig Railway had reached its full length. Hochspeyerbach
The Hochspeyerbach is a long river in the Palatinate forest in Rhineland-Palatinate and a left tributary of the Speyerbach. Course The Hochspeyerbach rises in the municipality Hochspeyer in the immediate vicinity of the swimming pool. In earlier times the river was dammed about from the source, and this reservoir was the swimming pool. The water of the newly reconstructed habitat spring pond is fed into a pipe system by an overflow drain. Mannheim–Saarbrücken Railway
The Mannheim–Saarbrücken railway (german: Pfälzische Ludwigsbahn) is a railway in the German states of Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and the Saarland that runs through Ludwigshafen am Rhein, Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Kaiserslautern, Homburg and St. Ingbert. It is the most important railway line that runs through the Palatinate. It serves both passenger and freight transport and carries international traffic.
