Hec Gervais
Hector Joseph "The Friendly Giant" Gervais (November 4, 1933 – July 19, 1997) was a Canadian curler from Edmonton, Alberta. He was a two-time Brier champion and former World Champion. In curling strategy, he is considered to be the inventor of the corner guard.''Edmonton Journal'', 22 Jul 1997, pg D3, "Quick wit, outside guards were Gervais trademarks" Gervais broke into the curling scene in the late 1950s, and in 1960 he teamed up with curling great Matt Baldwin to play in the Alberta provincials that year. Despite being considered a "super squad", the team didn't make it out of the province and disbanded after the season. Gervais would form his own team of Ron Anton, Ray Werner and Wally Ursuliak. This team would win the Alberta provincials, and also won that year's Macdonald Brier. The team (with Vic Raymer in place of Anton) closed the season by winning the 1961 Scotch Cup, becoming World Champions. At the time, the "gentle giant" weighed 270 pounds. ''Regina Leader-P ... Ronald M. Anton (born c. 1942) is a Canadian retired curler. He played as third on the Hec Gervais rink that won the 1961 Brier and 1974 Brier. The ''Calgary Herald'' is a daily newspaper published in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Publication began in 1883 as ''The Calgary Herald, Mining and Ranche Advocate, and General Advertiser''. It is owned by the Postmedia Network. Darrel Sutton
Darrel Robert Sutton (July 9, 1947 – August 2, 2018) was a Canadian curler. He played as lead on the Hec Gervais rink that won the 1974 Brier. He owned The Filter Shop in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Personal life Sutton was born in Lac La Biche, Alberta, Canada, in 1947, to Robert and Beatrice Sutton. He was married to Dorothy Sutton, and lived in Sherwood Park, Alberta. He had two daughters, and four grandchildren He died at the age of 71 on August 2, 2018. About a week before his death, Sutton had a massive stroke which left him paralyzed on one side of his body and unable to talk. He died due to complications from the stroke. The Filter Shop at BGE Darrel started his company out of the back of his Ford Falcon station Wagon in 1968, and eventually merged with Bud Guthrie Enterprises (BGE). Warren Hansen
Warren R. Hansen (born February 15, 1943) is a Canadian retired curler. He played as third on the Hec Gervais rink that won the 1974 Brier. Hansen served as director of event operations for Curling Canada, but retired in June 2015. He currently is operating a podcast called ''Inside Curling'' with Kevin Martin and Jim Jerome that is part of Sportsnet's podcast group. He previously worked for the United States Curling Association as a Business Development Consultant from 2017 - 2020. Hansen worked for Curling Canada (formerly the Canadian Curling Association) 1974 - 2015. His involvement with the organization has been instrumental in moving major events into hockey arenas, introducing the page playoff system, reducing the amount of sheets in events to four, implementing player dress codes, bringing in officiating of major events and the creation of the Continental Cup of Curling and Canada Cup of Curling. Don Duguid
Donald Gordon Duguid (born January 25, 1935) is a Canadian champion curler. A three-time winner of the Canadian Brier and two-time World Curling champion, Duguid won the Brier in 1965, 1970 and 1971, and the Worlds in 1970 and 1971. He was only the second skip ever to win back to back Briers in 1971. He was inducted into the Canadian Curling Hall of Fame in 1974, Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 1991, and the WCF Hall of Fame in 2013. In 2014, he was made a member of the Order of Manitoba. In 1981, his 1970 & 1971 teams were inducted into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame. Ernie Richardson (curler)
Ernest M. Richardson, CM (born August 4, 1931) is a four-time Canadian and world curling champion. Richardson mainly curled with his brother and two cousins, until an injury forced him to replace one of his cousins. He was nicknamed "The King", and has been inducted into the World Curling Federation Hall of Fame, the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame and the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame. Playing career Richardson was the skip of the Regina-based team made up of his brother Garnet and cousins Arnold and Wes during the late 1950s and early 1960s. In 1963, Wes Richardson was suffering from back issues, and was replaced on the team by Mel Perry. The team was dominant on the Canadian curling scene during this time.
