Heathmont Bowls Club
Heathmont Bowls Club is a lawn bowls club founded in 1957 and situated in the outer Eastern Melbourne suburb of Heathmont, adjacent to HE Parker Reserve and the Dandenong Creek Trail. The club is affiliated with Bowls Victoria and plays in the Eastern Ranges bowls region. History Foundation The establishment of the club was conceived by Jim O'Brien, Jack Egan and Clarrie Beard J.P., who met regularly at Daisy's Ringwood East Hotel. Realising that Heathmont was a very "dry" (non-alcoholic) area, they consequently decided to form a club and to apply for a liquor licence. On 18 June 1957, a meeting took place at Jim O'Brien's home. Bowls, also known as lawn bowls or lawn bowling, is a sport in which the objective is to roll biased balls so that they stop close to a smaller ball called a "jack" or "kitty". It is played on a bowling green, which may be flat (for "flat-green bowls") or convex or uneven (for "crown green bowls"). It is normally played outdoors (although there are many indoor venues) and the outdoor surface is either natural grass, artificial turf or cotula (in New Zealand). Mount Dandenong is a small township/suburb of Greater Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, east from Melbourne's central business district, located within the Shire of Yarra Ranges local government area. Mount Dandenong recorded a population of 1,271 at the 2021 census. Light to moderate snowfalls occur on Mount Dandenong a few times most years, mostly frequently between late winter and late spring. Dandenong Ranges
The Dandenong Ranges (commonly just The Dandenongs) are a set of low mountain ranges, rising to 633 metres at Mount Dandenong, approximately east of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The ranges consist mostly of rolling hills, steeply weathered valleys and gullies covered in thick temperate rainforest, predominantly of tall mountain ash trees and dense ferny undergrowth. After European settlement in the region, the range was used as a major local source of timber for Melbourne. The ranges were popular with day-trippers from the 1870s onwards. Much of the Dandenongs were protected by parklands as early as 1882 and by 1987 these parklands were amalgamated to form the Dandenong Ranges National Park, which was subsequently expanded in 1997. Heathmont is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia, 24 km east of Melbourne's Melbourne City Centre, Central Business District, located within the City of Maroondah Local government areas of Victoria, local government area. Heathmont recorded a population of 9,933 at the 2021 Australian census, 2021 census. History Heathmont was originally covered by hedge-to-hedge Orchard, apple orchards. The name appears to have come from the rising land in the area having heath or low, shrub-like vegetation on it. The first shop opened in 1923 in front of a house.
