''Heathcliff'' is a half-hour Saturday-morning cartoon, Saturday morning animated series based on the ''Heathcliff (comics), Heathcliff'' comic strip created by George Gately and produced by Ruby-Spears, Ruby-Spears Productions. It premiered on American Broadcasting Company, ABC on October 4, 1980, with a total of 26 episodes produced under the titles ''Heathcliff and Dingbat'' and ''Heathcliff and Marmaduke''. Joseph Clemens Ruby (March 30, 1933 – August 26, 2020) was an American animator, writer, television producer, and music editor. He was best known as the creator of the animated ''Scooby-Doo'' franchise, together with Ken Spears. In 1977, they co-founded the television animation production company Ruby-Spears Productions. Biography Ruby was born on March 30, 1933, in Los Angeles, the son of Mildred (''née'' Fineberg) and Carl Ruby, a doctor. His family was Jewish, and his parents were Canadian. He attended Fairfax High School. After graduating, he joined the United States Navy and worked as a sonar operator on a destroyer during the Korean War. Ruby-Spears Productions (also known as Ruby-Spears Enterprises) was a Burbank, California–based American entertainment production company that specialized in animation with another branch in Rome, Italy. Heathcliff (comics)
''Heathcliff'' is an American comic strip created by George Gately in 1973, featuring the title character, an orange cat. Now written and drawn by Gately's nephew, Peter Gallagher, it is distributed to over 1,000 newspapers by Creators Syndicate, which took over the comic from McNaught Syndicate in 1988. The strip is usually presented in single-panel gag frames on weekdays. On Sundays, though, the strip is expanded to multiple panels and titled ''Sunday with Heathcliff''. A regular feature in the Sunday strips is ''Kitty Korner'', where unusual cats in the real world are described. Heathcliff daily comics can be currently read online on GoComics. ''Heathcliff'' ( ''Heathcliff and the Catillac Cats'', known as ''Les Entrechats'' in French) is a children's animated series that debuted on September 3, 1984. Produced by DIC Audiovisuel, it was the second animated series based on the '' Heathcliff'' comic strip (after Ruby-Spears' '' Heathcliff'' from 1980). 65 half-hour episodes aired in first-run syndication in the fall of 1984, followed by a second season of 21 episodes in 1985 ran in syndication until it ended in 1988. The Catillac Cats characters (identified in the end credits as ''Cats and Co.'') were created by Jean Chalopin and Bruno Bianchi. The McNaught Syndicate was an American newspaper syndicate founded in 1922. It was established by Virgil Venice McNitt (who gave it his name) and Charles V. McAdam. Its best known contents were the columns by Will Rogers and O. O. McIntyre, the ''Dear Abby'' letters section and comic strips, including '' Joe Palooka'' and '' Heathcliff''.
