Haymarket District (Lincoln, Nebraska)
Haymarket District is a historic section of downtown Lincoln, Nebraska. Overview The area is a tourist attraction and home to the Haymarket Park baseball stadium. Its historic significance has been recognized by being listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Lincoln Haymarket Historic District. The name Haymarket originated from the 1867 market square where hay, and travel items, were marketed. The warehouses have been readapted as retail shops. The district held a Halloween event in 2018. Buildings in the district were designed by various firms including Fiske & Meginnis and Meginnis and Schaumberg. The historic J. C. Ridnour Building (1925) designed by Meginnis and Schaumberg is in the district. Halloween or Hallowe'en (less commonly known as Allhalloween, All Hallows' Eve, or All Saints' Eve) is a celebration observed in many countries on 31 October, the eve of the Western Christian feast of All Saints' Day. History Of Lincoln, Nebraska
The history of Lincoln, Nebraska began with the settlement of the village of Lancaster in 1856. The county of Lancaster was founded in 1859. Prior to settlement from the westward expansion of the United States, Plains Indians, descendants of indigenous peoples who occupied the area for thousands of years lived in and hunted along Salt Creek. Settlers first came to extract salt from the wild salt flats of Salt Creek. Nebraska was granted statehood March 1, 1867. Soon afterwards a commission created by the State was appointed to locate the State Capital on State lands. The village of Lancaster was chosen for the Capital of Nebraska. The village of Lancaster became Lincoln. Lincoln was named after Abraham Lincoln. The first State Capitol was completed in 1868. Lincoln incorporated on April 1, 1869. Meginnis and Schaumberg was an architectural firm in Lincoln, Nebraska. The firm lasted from 1925 until 1943 when partner Harry Meginnis died. The firm designed several buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places and three buildings on University of Nebraska's East Campus as well as the Mueller Tower on its City Campus. History Meginnis trained in his father's construction business and then worked for Dieman & Fiske with Ferdinand C. Fiske in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Fiske hired Meginnis as a draftsman in his Lincoln office from 1901 until 1907. Fiske & Meginnis, Architects was an architecture firm partnership from 1915–1924 between Ferdinand C. Fiske (1856–1930) and Harry Meginnis in Lincoln, Nebraska. Twelve of the buildings they designed are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). The two men have additional buildings listed on the National Register with other partnerships or individually credited. Related firms were Fiske and Dieman, Fiske, Meginnis and Schaumberg, and Meginnis and Schaumberg. Ferdinand C. Fiske was born in New York and raised in Iowa. He was educated at Cornell University and moved to Lincoln during the building boom of 1887 and practiced there the rest of his life.
