Hayim Katsman
Hayim Katsman ( he, חיים כצמן; 3 October 1991 – 7 October 2023) was an American-Israeli peace activist and academic. He was murdered in the Holit massacre in Israel, on 7 October 2023. Life Katsman was born in Israel on 3 October 1991. His parents immigrated to Israel from New York City in 1990. His mother was originally from Cincinnati, and his father was from Seattle. His maternal grandparents were both Holocaust survivors. Katsman lived in Petah Tikva, but after completing his mandatory IDF service, he moved to kibbutz Holit out of a desire to "revive" the community. He initially worked as a car mechanic, before becoming a gardener for the kibbutz. He later opened a bar there. Katsman attended Open University, where he studied philosophy and political science, before pursuing a master’s degree in politics from Ben-Gurion University, where he led the adjunct professors' union. Yarkon Cemetery
Yarkon Cemetery ( he, בית העלמין ירקון) is the main cemetery for the Tel Aviv Metropolitan Area of Israel. It is located within the Petah Tikva city limits, between the Yarkon River in the West, Highway 5 in the North, and the 491 road from East and South. History The need to establish the cemetery was driven by crowding in the Southern Cemetery in Bat Yam. A number of locations were considered, including the area north of Ramat Aviv. The eventual location was preferred for being relatively far from the center of Tel Aviv. The cemetery was opened by chief rabbis Hayim David HaLevi and Israel Meir Lau in 1991. 2023 Israel–Hamas War Hostage Crisis
On 7 October 2023, as part of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood at the beginning of the 2023 Israel–Hamas war, Palestinian militants (led by Hamas) abducted around 250 people from Israel to the Gaza Strip with the stated goal of forcing Israel to release Palestinian prisoners. As of January 7, 2024, 110 hostages were returned alive to Israel, with 105 being released in a prisoner exchange deal, 4 were released by Hamas unilaterally and 1 hostage was rescued by the IDF. 27 hostages were reportedly killed in Hamas captivity according to Israel, 3 of the hostages were killed by friendly fire from the IDF and the bodies of 8 hostages were repatriated through a military operation – 136 remain in captivity in the Gaza Strip. Holit Massacre
On 7 October 2023, the Ezzedeen al-Qassam Brigades (Al-Qassam Brigades, the militant wing of the Hamas party) attacked Holit, a kibbutz close to the Gaza–Israel barrier, border fence with the Gaza Strip, as part of the 7 October attacks on Israel. Twelve residents including one member of the security team were killed, Three foreign kibbutz employees, two from Nepal and a Moldavian, were also killed. A resident, whose parents were killed, and a Thai employee, were injured. They recovered, with the employee subsequently returning to Thailand. Kibbutz
A kibbutz ( he, קִבּוּץ / , lit. "gathering, clustering"; plural: kibbutzim / ) is an intentional community in Israel that was traditionally based on agriculture. The first kibbutz, established in 1909, was Degania. Today, farming has been partly supplanted by other economic branches, including industrial plants and high-tech enterprises.
