Haydn's Birthplace
Haydn's birthplace is in Rohrau, Austria, Rohrau in Lower Austria. The composer Joseph Haydn was born here in 1732. Today it is a museum. History The farmhouse was built about 1728 by Matthias Haydn, a wheelwright and later a ''Marktrichter'' (village mayor). He and his wife Maria, who had been a cook in the service of Aloys Thomas Raimund, Count Harrach, Count Harrach, had several children, including Joseph Haydn, born on 31 March 1732, and his brother Michael Haydn, Michael, also a composer, born on 14 September 1737. Joseph's parents recognized his musical ability, and he left home aged six to be educated in Hainburg an der Donau, Hainburg and later in Vienna. However, he retained a fondness for his birthplace, revisiting it in 1795. In 1958 the building was acquired by the State of Lower Austria, and it was restored to its original condition. Rohrau (german: Marktgemeinde Rohrau) is a village in the state of Lower Austria. The name comes from two German words: ''Rohr'' (reed) and ''Au'' (riparian forest). Joseph Haydn
Franz Joseph Haydn ( , ; 31 March 173231 May 1809) was an Austrian composer of the Classical period (music), Classical period. He was instrumental in the development of chamber music such as the string quartet and piano trio. His contributions to musical form have led him to be called "Father of the Symphony" and "Father of the String quartet, String Quartet". Haydn spent much of his career as a court musician for the wealthy Esterházy family at their Eszterháza Castle. Until the later part of his life, this isolated him from other composers and trends in music so that he was, as he put it, "forced to become original". Matthias Haydn
Mathias Haydn (31 January 1699 – 12 September 1763) was the father of two famous composers, Joseph and Michael Haydn. He worked as a wheelwright in the Austrian village of Rohrau, where he also served as ''Marktrichter'', an office akin to village mayor. Aloys Thomas Raimund, Count Harrach
Aloys Thomas Raimund, Count Harrach (7 March 1669, Vienna – 7 November, 1742, Vienna) was an Austrian politician and diplomat. Biography His father was Ferdinand Bonaventura I. He belonged to the Austrian noble family of Harrach. Aloys von Harrach was the envoy of the Austrian Emperor in Dresden in 1694, served in the same function in Spain from 1697 to 1700 and was in Dresden again in 1711, and thereafter in Berlin and Hanover on diplomatic missions. From 1715 to 1742 he acted as 'Landmarschall' in Lower Austria, and from 1728 to 1733 as viceroy of Naples, from where he gathered numerous art pieces (Gallery in Rohrau). From 1734 to his death Count Harrach was a member of the Secret State Conference (Geheime Staatskonferenz) in Vienna. Michael Haydn
Johann Michael Haydn (; 14 September 173710 August 1806) was an Austrian composer of the Classical period, the younger brother of Joseph Haydn. Life Michael Haydn was born in 1737 in the Austrian village of Rohrau, near the Hungarian border. His father was Mathias Haydn, a wheelwright who also served as "Marktrichter", an office akin to village mayor. Haydn's mother Maria, Koller, had previously worked as a cook in the palace of Count Harrach, the presiding aristocrat of Rohrau. Mathias was an enthusiastic folk musician, who during the journeyman period of his career had taught himself to play the harp, and he also made sure that his children learned to sing.
