Hayden Mango
The 'Haden' mango (or 'Hayden') is a named mango cultivar that became one of the most widely cultivated in the world after it was introduced in the early 20th century through south Florida. It would ultimately become the parent of many other mango cultivars later developed in Florida. History In 1902, Captain John J. Haden, a retired U.S. army officer living in Coconut Grove, Florida, planted four dozen seedlings of Mulgoba mangoes he had purchased from Professor Elbridge Gale in Mangonia, near Lake Worth Lagoon in the area of present-day West Palm Beach. Haden would die the following year, but his wife Florence cared for the trees at their property in Coconut Grove, which first fruited in 1910. One tree in particular produced superior quality fruit, with brilliant color and good flavor. This cultivar was selected and given the family name. Both historical and pedigree analysis indicates that Haden was likely the result of a cross between Mulgova (misspelled as ''Mulgoba'', ... Hayden Geological Survey Of 1871
The Hayden Geological Survey of 1871 explored the region of northwestern Wyoming that later became Yellowstone National Park in 1872. It was led by geologist Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden. The 1871 survey was not Hayden's first, but it was the first federally funded geological survey to explore and further document features in the region soon to become Yellowstone National Park, and played a prominent role in convincing the U.S. Congress to pass the legislation creating the park. In 1894, Nathaniel P. Langford, the first park superintendent and a member of the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition which explored the park in 1870, wrote this about the Hayden expedition: Origins The 1871 Hayden survey had its roots in the Pacific Railroad Survey bill passed by Congress in 1853 to find the best routes for railroads from the Mississippi to the Pacific coast. The bill spawned an era of federally funded ''Great Surveys'' undertaken by the Department of the Interior after the Civil War th ... Hayden (surname)
The surname Hayden has several origins. In some cases it is a form of '' O'Hayden'', which is derived from the Irish ''Ó hÉideáin'' and ''Ó hÉidín''. These latter surnames mean "descendant of ''Éideán''" and "descendant of ''Éidín''", respectively; the Irish personal names ''Éideán'' and ''Éidín'' are likely derived from the Irish ''éideadh'', which means "clothes", "armour". For example, the placename ''Haydon'' occurs in Northumberland, and is derived from the Old English word elements ''heg'' ("hay") and ''denu'' ("valley").
