Hausdorff Center For Mathematics
The Hausdorff Center for Mathematics (HCM) is a research center in Bonn, formed by the four mathematical institutes of the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn (Mathematical Institute, Institute for Applied Mathematics, Institute for Numerical Simulation, Research Institute for Discrete Mathematics), the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics (MPIM), and the Institute for Social and Economic Sciences. History The Hausdorff Center was established in 2006 as one of the seventeen national Clusters of Excellence that were part of the German government's Excellence Initiative. It was officially opened with a colloquium on 19 and 20 January 2007. In 2012, a second funding period was granted. The Hausdorff Center is the only cluster of excellence in the area of mathematics in Germany. It was ranked 14th in the world for mathematics by the Academic Ranking of World Universities in 2021. Gerd Faltings
Gerd Faltings (; born 28 July 1954) is a German mathematician known for his work in arithmetic geometry. Education From 1972 to 1978, Faltings studied mathematics and physics at the University of Münster. In 1978 he received his PhD in mathematics. Career and research In 1981 he obtained the ''venia legendi'' (Habilitation) in mathematics, from the University of Münster. During this time he was an assistant professor at the University of Münster. From 1982 to 1984, he was professor at the University of Wuppertal. Christoph Thiele (born 1968 in Bielefeld) is a German mathematician working in the field of harmonic analysis. After completing his undergraduate studies at TU Darmstadt and Bielefeld University, his Ph.D. was obtained in 1995 at Yale under the supervision of Ronald Coifman. After spending time at UCLA where he was promoted to full professor, he occupies the Hausdorff Chair at the University of Bonn. Karl-Theodor "Theo" Sturm (born 7.November 1960) is a German mathematician working in stochastic analysis. Life and work After obtaining his Abitur from the Platen-Gymnasium Ansbach in 1980, Sturm began to study Mathematics and Physics at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg where he graduated in 1986 with the Diploma in Mathematics and the State Examination in Mathematics and Physics. Felix Hausdorff ( , ; November 8, 1868 – January 26, 1942) was a German mathematician who is considered to be one of the founders of modern topology and who contributed significantly to set theory, descriptive set theory, measure theory, and functional analysis. Life became difficult for Hausdorff and his family after Kristallnacht in 1938. The next year he initiated efforts to emigrate to the United States, but was unable to make arrangements to receive a research fellowship.
