Hauptzollamt
Wien Mitte is a rail and U-Bahn station in Vienna, close to the city centre. It is the city terminus of Vienna's City Airport Train (CAT), which provides non-stop service to Vienna International Airport. The station is a major hub for S-Bahn suburban trains, with little service by InterCity trains. The station is connected to the ''Mitte / Landstraße U-Bahn station''. History The first station to occupy this site was called Hauptzollamt and opened in 1859. It was rebuilt between 1899 and 1901 to connect with the Stadtbahn, which ran below ground. When the S-Bahn opened in 1962, this station was renamed Landstraße, which remains the name of the U-Bahn portion. The main portion of the station was renamed ''Wien Mitte'' after it became a stop for international trains in 1975 due to construction at the Wien Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof. Vienna Stadtbahn
The Vienna Stadtbahn (german: Wiener Stadtbahn) was a rail-based public transportation system operated under this name from 1898 until 1989. Today, the Vienna U-Bahn lines U4 and U6 and the Vienna S-Bahn (commuter rail) run on its former lines. The Stadtbahn is one of Vienna's better-known examples of early Art Nouveau architecture. Its most famous buildings are the two former station entrances on Karlsplatz, now used as a café and a museum respectively, and the ''Hofpavillon'', a station built specifically for Emperor Franz Joseph, located at the eastern end of Hietzing station. Other preserved historical stations are the elevated stations along the Gürtel and in some of the suburbs. The Vienna S-Bahn is a suburban commuter rail network in Vienna, Austria. As opposed to the city-run urban metro network, the Vienna U-Bahn, it extends beyond the borders of the city, is operated by the ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways), and consists of many branch lines. ''S-Bahn'' is short for ''Schnellbahn'', which can be translated as "rapid railway". Network The Vienna S-Bahn consists of a multitude of branch lines extending beyond the city boundary, most of which converge at a central route segment called the ''Stammstrecke'' ("trunk line"). City Airport Train
The City Airport Train (CAT) is an express airport rail link train that connects Vienna International Airport and Vienna city center (Wien Mitte railway station) in 16 minutes without intermediate stops. Basic facts The City Air Terminal Betriebsgesellschaft m.b.H., owned 50.1% by Vienna International Airport, Vienna Airport and 49.9% by Austrian Federal Railways, was founded in 2002 to operate the express train service. Trains run between the airport and Wien Mitte train station daily every half hour from 05:37 am to 23:39 pm. For the approximately 20 kilometer route the CAT requires 16 minutes without intermediate stops. Wien Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof (translated as Vienna Franz Joseph Station, abbreviated as Wien FJB) is a train station in the Alsergrund district of Vienna, Austria. It serves as the southern terminus of the Emperor Franz Joseph Railway. History A first provisional terminus opened with the inauguration of the first section of the Emperor Franz Joseph Railway from Vienna to Eggenburg in 1870. Landstraße (Vienna U-Bahn)
Landstraße (; Central Bavarian: ''Laundstrossn'') is the 3rd municipal district of Vienna, Austria (german: 3. Bezirk). It is near the center of Vienna and was established in the 19th century. Landstraße is a heavily populated urban area with many workers and residential homes. Wien.gv.at webpage (see below: References). It has 89,834 inhabitants in an area of 7.42 km2 (2.9 sq miles).
