Harvey Heth
Harvey Heth (1770–1816) was born on April 28, 1770 in Virginia. He was the son of Agnes McMahon Heth and Captain Henry Heth, a new Irish immigrant to the United States and a veteran of the American Revolutionary War. He was also the brother of several other Revolutionary War veterans, including Henry Heth. Biography Harvey moved to Indiana Territory in the late 18th century and was one of the first settlers in Harrison County, Indiana. He later purchased a large tract of land from William Henry Harrison. The land included much of present-day Heth Township and the south eastern corner of Corydon. He built a mill on Buck Creek, one of the first in the state. Harvey was among the first elected to the Indiana Territory Legislative Council in 1809 when Congress forced the dissolution of the existing legislature and permitted the state to begin electing their own representatives. Indiana General Assembly
The Indiana General Assembly is the state legislature, or legislative branch, of the state of Indiana. It is a bicameral legislature that consists of a lower house, the Indiana House of Representatives, and an upper house, the Indiana Senate. The General Assembly meets annually at the Indiana Statehouse in Indianapolis. Members of the General Assembly are elected from districts that are realigned every ten years. Representatives serve terms of two years and senators serve terms of four years. Both houses can create bills, but bills must pass both houses before it can be submitted to the governor and enacted into law. Gayle Thornbrough
Gayle Thornbrough (October 29, 1914 – November 8, 1999) was born in Hendricks County, Indiana, and grew up in Indianapolis. She joined the Indiana Historical Society in 1937 and served as its director of publications and library, an editor of historical documents, and its first executive secretary until her retirement in 1984. In addition to her work at the IHS, Thornbrough was involved in historical editing projects for the Indiana Historical Bureau from 1947 to 1966 and spent twenty months in 1967–1968 as a manuscript specialist at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Thornbrough is best known for her contributions to editing historical documents. Henry Heth (businessman)
Henry "Harry" Heth (1764-1822) was a Virginia officer and businessman. After settling in Chesterfield County, Virginia near Richmond circa 1759, he established and ran the Black Heath coal mines following the American Revolutionary War. During that conflict, Heth and his brothers served officers in the Continental Army and would become founding members of the Society of the Cincinnati. Heth became involved in many commercial activities in Richmond and Norfolk from the late 1790s to his death. Family and early life Although one source discussed below names him as likely born in the British Colony of Virginia around 1759 to 1772, Heth first appears age 18 years old on a Virginia state census conducted in Richmond in 1782. Heth Township is one of twelve townships in Harrison County, Indiana, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,278 and it contained 573 housing units. History The township was named for Harvey Heth, who surveyed much of Southern Indiana. He is buried in the western part of the township and was a major landholder in the area during the early 19th century. It contains Squire Boone Caverns and Historic Village where Squire Boone, the brother of Daniel Boone, is buried. In the early 19th century, the township was also home to Isiah and James Boone. Corydon, Indiana
Corydon is a town in Harrison Township, Harrison County, Indiana. Located north of the Ohio River in the extreme southern part of the U.S. state of Indiana, it is the seat of government for Harrison County. Corydon was founded in 1808 and served as the capital of the Indiana Territory from 1813 to 1816. It was the site of Indiana's first constitutional convention, which was held June 10–29, 1816. Forty-three convened to consider statehood for Indiana and drafted its first state constitution.
