Jan de Hartog (April 22, 1914 – September 22, 2002) was a Dutch playwright, novelist and occasional social critic who moved to the United States in the early 1960s and became a Quaker. Biography Early years Jan de Hartog was born to a Dutch Calvinist Minister and professor of theology, Arnold Hendrik, and his wife, Lucretia de Hartog (who herself was a lecturer in medieval mysticism), in 1914. He was raised in the city of Haarlem, the Netherlands. At around the age of 11, he ran away to become a cabin boy, otherwise referred to as a "sea mouse" on board a Dutch fishing boat. His father had him brought home, but shortly afterwards, Jan ran off to sea again. The experiences thus gained became material for some of his future novels, as many of his life experiences did. At 16, he briefly attended the Kweekschool voor de Zeevaart in Amsterdam, a training college for the Dutch merchant marine but was only there for a year. Dirk Hartog (; baptised 30 October 1580 – buried 11 October 1621) was a 17th-century Dutch sailor and explorer. Dirk Hartog's expedition was the second European group to land in Australia and the first to leave behind an artefact to record his visit, the Hartog Plate. His name is sometimes alternatively spelled Dirck Hartog or Dierick Hartochszch. Ernest Giles referred to him as Theodoric Hartog. The Western Australian island Dirk Hartog Island is named after Hartog. "Joop" (Joost) Hartog (born in Sliedrecht, the Netherlands, on June 29, 1946) is a Dutch economist and an Emeritus Professor of Economics at the University of Amsterdam. Marion Moss Hartog (22 October 182129 October 1907) was an English Jewish poet, author, and educator. She was the editor of the first Jewish women's periodical, ''The Jewish Sabbath Journal''. Biography Early life Marion Moss was born at Portsmouth on 22 October 1821, one of twelve children of Amelia () and Joseph Moss. Philip Hartog
Sir Philip Joseph Hartog (2 March 1864 – 27 June 1947) was a British chemist and educationalist who undertook this role in England and India. Early life and education Hartog was born in London on 2 March 1864, the third son of Alfonse and Marion Hartog, and the younger brother of Cécile, Héléna, Numa and Marcus Hartog. He was educated at University College School, the Universities of Paris and Heidelberg, and the Collège de France. In 1889 he went to Owens College, Manchester, as Bishop Berkeley Scholar. Jacob Pieter Den Hartog (July 23, 1901 Ambarawa, Dutch East Indies – March 17, 1989) was a Dutch–American mechanical engineer and Professor of Mechanical Engineering at MIT. Biography J. P. François Hartog (born in 1946) is a French historian. He is noted for his "regimes of historicity" theory as well as his analyses of presentism and the contemporary experience of time. Hartog is also an academic and author of several works including ''The Mirror of Herodotus: The Representation of the Other in the Writing of History.'' Biography Hartog was born in 1946. Hartog Plate or Dirk Hartog's Plate is either of two pewter plates, although primarily the first, which were left on Dirk Hartog Island during a period of European exploration of the western coast of Australia prior to European settlement there. The first plate, left in 1616 by Dutch explorer Dirk Hartog, is the oldest-known artifact of European exploration in Australia still in existence. A replacement, copying the text of the original plus some new text, was left in 1697the original dish returned to the Netherlands, where it is on display in the Rijksmuseum. Lori Den Hartog () is an American politician serving as a member of the Idaho Senate from the 22nd district. She assumed office on December 1, 2014. Early life and education Den Hartog was born in Escondido, California and graduated from Nampa Christian High School.
