Harry Rose (vaudevillian)
Harry Rose ( 1893 – December 10, 1962) was an American vaudeville comedian, singer and songwriter. There is some uncertainty over his origins. Anthony Slide's ''The Encyclopedia of Vaudeville'' states that he was born in Leeds, England, on December 2, 1893, moving to Milwaukee as a child in 1905;Anthony Slide, "Harry Rose", ''The Encyclopedia of Vaudeville'', University Press of Mississippi, 2012, p.436 but official records and a newspaper obituary give his birth name as Henry Arthur Rosenthal, born in Milwaukee on July 13, 1892. Rose claimed to be a nephew of the vaudeville comedian Joe Weber. He made his stage debut as a comedian and singer in Milwaukee in 1910, and then served in the military in France during the First World War. After his return he became established on Broadway in shows such as ''George White's Scandals'' (1921), ''The O'Brien Girl'' (1921), and ''The Merry Malones'' (1927). Short Film
A short film is any motion picture that is short enough in running time not to be considered a feature film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences defines a short film as "an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits". In the United States, short films were generally termed short subjects from the 1920s into the 1970s when confined to two 35 mm reels or less, and featurettes for a film of three or four reels. "Short" was an abbreviation for either term. The increasingly rare industry term "short subject" carries more of an assumption that the film is shown as part of a presentation along with a feature film. Hubert Prior Vallée (July 28, 1901 – July 3, 1986), known professionally as Rudy Vallée, was an American singer, musician, actor, and radio host. He was one of the first modern pop stars of the teen idol type. Early life Hubert Prior Vallée was born in Island Pond, Vermont, United States, on July 28, 1901, the son of Catherine Lynch and Charles Alphonse Vallée. His maternal grandparents were English and Irish, while his paternal grandparents were French-Canadians from Quebec. Vallée grew up in Westbrook, Maine. On March 29, 1917, he enlisted to fight in World War I, but was discharged when U.S. Navy authorities discovered he was only 15 years old. He had enlisted in Portland, Maine, under the false birth date of July 28, 1899. ''"Kitty from Kansas City"'' is a "comedy fox trot song" with lyrics by Harry Rose and music by Jesse Greer, popularized in 1930 by the singer, Rudy Vallée. Photos of sheet music, apparently from 1921, provide the names of Rose and Greer, as does a listing for Milt Coleman's 1930 recording. "New Arrangement" by Vallée and Geroge Bronson appears just below the names of Rose and Greer on the 1931 sheet music. However, photos of the phonograph record, Victor 22419-A list "Rose-Branson-Vallée" as the authors. The song is about a Midwestern girl called Kitty. Verses repeat the phrases, "She wasn't pretty," "She's so dumb," and "She wasn't hard to see; she weighed 243" as setups for punned gag lines. For example, "She's so dumb, her brain is in a whirl/Why, she thinks that Babe Ruth is a chorus girl!" Yet, the singer professes, he loves Kitty nonetheless. Anthony Slide (born 7 November 1944) is an English writer who has produced more than seventy books and edited a further 150 on the history of popular entertainment. He wrote a "letter from Hollywood" for the British ''Film Review'' magazine from 1979 to 1994, and he wrote a monthly book review column for ''Classic Images'' from 1989 to 2001. He is a member of the editorial board of the American Film Institute Catalog.
