Harris Gunworks, a Phoenix, Arizona based U.S. firearms manufacturer, began operations as G. McMillan & Co. after Gale McMillan spun off the rifle building portion of his McMillan Rifle Stock business. McMillan sold this to a group of investors headed by Wes Harris. With Harris as President, the company received its first of many military contract awards. Harris parlayed McMillan's reputation for high quality, high accuracy benchrest competition rifles (previously built primarily from the rifle actions of other manufacturers), to create markets for military sniper rifles and custom hunting rifles. Muzzle Brake
A muzzle brake or recoil compensator is a device connected to, or a feature integral to the construction of, the muzzle or barrel of a firearm or cannon that is intended to redirect a portion of propellant gases to counter recoil and unwanted muzzle rise. Barrels with an integral muzzle brake are often said to be ported. The concept of a muzzle brake was first introduced for artillery. It was a common feature on many anti-tank guns, especially those mounted on tanks, in order to reduce the area needed to take up the strokes of recoil and kickback. They have been used in various forms for rifles and pistols to help control recoil and the rising of the barrel that normally occurs after firing. Test Target
A test target (for spacecraft) is a common feature on interplanetary landing craft such as the Viking Lander and Mars Exploration Rovers. The target is usually a visible marker or plate on the exterior of the vehicle within sight of the lander's imaging system (usually a CCD camera). The target possesses samples of primary colors and a grey scale. Chrome Moly
41xx steel is a family of SAE steel grades, as specified by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Alloying elements include chromium and molybdenum, and as a result these materials are often informally referred to as chromoly steel (common variant stylings include ''chrome-moly'', ''cro-moly'', ''CrMo'', ''CRMO'', ''CR-MOLY'', and similar). They have an excellent strength to weight ratio and are considerably stronger and harder than standard 1020 steel, but are not easily welded, requiring thermal treatment both before and after welding to avoid cold cracking.
