Harold Y. Hwang
Harold Yoonsung Hwang (born 4 August 1970 in Pasadena, California) is an American physicist, specializing in materials physics, condensed matter physics, nanoscience, and quantum engineering. Education and career Harold Hwang graduated in 1993 from MIT with B.S. in physics, as well as B.S. and M.S. in electrical engineering. He received in 1997 his Ph.D. from Princeton University with thesis advisor Nai Phuan Ong. At Bell Laboratories in New Jersey, Hwang was from 1994 to 1996 a research assistant and from 1996 to 2003 a member of the technical staff. At the Department of Advanced Materials Science and the Department of Applied Physics at University of Tokyo in Kashiwa, Japan, he was from 2003 to 2008 an associate professor and from 2009 a full professor. From 2006 to 2007 he was also a visiting associate professor at the Institute for Chemical Research at Kyoto University. Mott Insulator
Mott insulators are a class of materials that are expected to conduct electricity according to conventional band theories, but turn out to be insulators (particularly at low temperatures). These insulators fail to be correctly described by band theories of solids due to their strong electron–electron interactions, which are not considered in conventional band theory. A Mott transition is a transition from a metal to an insulator, driven by the strong interactions between electrons. One of the simplest models that can capture Mott transition is the Hubbard model. The band gap in a Mott insulator exists between bands of like character, such as 3d electron bands, whereas the band gap in charge-transfer insulators exists between anion and cation states, such as between O 2p and Ni 3d bands in NiO. The American Physical Society (APS) is a not-for-profit membership organization of professionals in physics and related disciplines, comprising nearly fifty divisions, sections, and other units. Jochen Mannhart
Jochen Mannhart (born 24 April 1960 in Metzingen) is a German physicist. Biography Jochen Mannhart studied physics at the University of Tübingen, Germany, from 1980 to 1986, where he also received his PhD in 1987 and his habilitation in 1994. From 1987 to 1989, he was a visiting scientist at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY. From 1989 to 1996, he was a Research Staff Member at the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory, where he was manager of the New Materials and Heterostructures research group. From 1996 to 2011, he was a chaired professor at the Center for Electronic Correlations and Magnetism at the University of Augsburg, Germany.
