Harold Hastings (speedway Rider)
Harold John Hastings (13 July 1906 – 5 November 1965) was a motorcycle speedway rider from Australia. He was champion of Australia (2 lap) in 1931 and earned several international caps for the Australia national speedway team. Biography Hastings, born in Ipswich, Queensland, was one of the many Australians that travelled over to the United Kingdom in the early 1930, as pioneers of speedway. He was recruited by Lea Bridge and his first season was racing in the 1930 Speedway Southern League. In April 1930, he represented Australia against England. He returned for the Australian season and enhanced his reputation by winning the 1931, 2 lap Australian Solo Championship, at the Melbourne Motordrome before signing for a second season with Lea Bridge. Lea Bridge (speedway)
Lea Bridge also known as Clapton Saints were a British speedway team that existed from 1928 to 1938. They raced at the Lea Bridge Stadium. Brief history They first competed in the Southern League in 1929 and were based at Lea Bridge Stadium, Walthamstow, London When they entered the National League in 1932, they took over the fixtures from Southampton, halfway through the National Association Trophy and taking the name of Clapton Saints. In 1934, the team reverted to the name Lea Bridge but once again were unable to fulfill their fixtures, which were completed by Walthamstow Wolves. The team re-appeared during the 1938 Speedway National League Division Two, under the name of Lea Bridge Cubs, which would be their last season in existence. Belle Vue Aces
The Belle Vue Aces are a British motorcycle speedway, speedway club, based in Manchester. The club hold the record of having won the top tier List of United Kingdom speedway league champions, League championship 13 times. They currently compete in the SGB Premiership, racing at The National Speedway Stadium, with home matches usually taking place on Monday evenings. They also run a second team in the National League (speedway), National Development League, known as the Belle Vue Colts. Australian Solo Championship
The Australian Solo Championship is a motorcycle speedway championship held each year to determine the Australian national champion. It is organised by Motorcycling Australia (MA) and is the oldest continuously running national speedway championship in the world having been run since 1926 with the exception of 1942-1945 when racing was suspended during World War II and 1955-1961 when the championship was not held. The first Australian Solo Championship in 1926 was held at the Newcastle Showground in Newcastle. It was won by American rider Cecil Brown from Mick Brennan and Roy Hindle. Legendary Danish rider Ole Olsen (1976) and Australia's own Jason Crump (2007) are the only riders who have won the championship while being the reigning Speedway World Champion. Motorcycle Speedway
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). Competitors use this surface to slide their machines sideways, powersliding or broadsiding into the bends. On the straight sections of the track, the motorcycles reach speeds of up to . Australia is one of the major teams in international motorcycle speedway with the country regarded as the birthplace of the sport in the 1920s. The current team is managed by former rider Mark Lemon, and captained by 2012 World Champion Chris Holder. The British Newspaper Archive web site provides access to searchable digitized archives of British and Irish newspapers. It was launched in November 2011. History The British Library Newspapers section was based in Colindale in north London, until 2013, and is now divided between the St Pancras and Boston Spa sites. The library has an almost complete collection of British and Irish newspapers since 1840. This is partly because of the legal deposit legislation of 1869, which required newspapers to supply a copy of each edition of a newspaper to the library. Melbourne Motordrome
The Motordrome, also known as the Olympic Park Speedway, the Melbourne Speedway or the Victorian Speedway, was a former speedway and Australian rules football ground located approximately on the site of the present day Melbourne Rectangular Stadium in Olympic Park in Melbourne, Victoria. The ground was primarily a speedway track, but also hosted football matches. History Melbourne Carnivals Pty.
