Harmen Abma (21 November 1937 in Hilaard – 30 November 2007 in Sneek) was a Frisian abstract and conceptual artist and painter. He was a member of an artistic group in the 1960s known as in Harlingen. He often experimented with materials as diverse as electric wire, concrete mesh, rope, jute and seat cushions in his artistic works, and contributed tile pictures to houses. In the 1970s and 1980s he heavily researched and produced work based on colour mixing, and exploring the mathematical dimensions of it such as ratio and surface. Harmen van Bol'es (Amsterdam 1689 - Saint-Petersburg 1764) was a royal master builder in Russia. Harmen's father was the travelling windmill builder, originating from a family of carpenters from South Holland, the Netherlands. Grandfather Harmen established himself as a carpenter in the village Bolnes, the origin of the family name. When Cornelis was appointed Town Carpenter in Schiedam in 1690 the family moved there. In his youth Harmen was taught by his father, the City Architect, but he did not follow in his footsteps; his younger brother, Arij van Bol'es became City Architect in 1724. This function was filled by his descendants until 1827. On 26 April 1713 Harmen van Bol'es signed a contract in The Hague entering into the service of Tsar Peter the Great of Russia. In 1703 Tsar Peter had established Saint Petersburg at the mouth of the Neva River. Harmen Harmense Gansevoort ( – July 23, 1709) was an early American settler, brewer, landowner, and patriarch of the Gansevoort family. Early life Harmen Harmense Gansevoort was born ca. 1634 in Dersum, Prince-Bishopric of Münster, Holy Roman Empire. He was son of peasant farmer and beer brewer Hermann Nanckemann (ca. 1600 – 1652) and his wife Elisabeth Gansevorth (ca. 1605 – 1681). After his father has died in 1652, Harmen moved to the region's main city, Groningen, Dutch Republic, to learn beer brewing. New Netherland In 1655, Herman emigrated to New Netherland, first he lived in New Amsterdam, later in Catskill and, since 1657, in Beverwijck. Harmen de Hoop (born 1959) is a Dutch artist known for his anonymous and illegal interventions in public space. They are small, yet very direct actions that react to the manner in which urban space is used and the regulations that have been laid down for those who use it. His works often address the lack of freedom that the individual has when it comes to the way public space is allowed to be used and the over-regulation of society. With his interventions he breaches the systems and brings forward another, often humane perspective. Harmen Jansen Knickerbocker (ca. 1648 – ca. 1720) was a Dutch colonist associated with the settlements of Albany (formerly Beverwyck and Fort Orange), Schaghticoke, Red Hook and Tivoli and in New Netherland. It appears to be the case that he never used the surname Knickerbocker, as we know it, during his own lifetime; that he went by a variety of surnames including Van Bommel, and the variety of forms that would evolve into Knickerbacker towards the end of his life, and Knickerbocker after his death. Very occasionally the name Van Wye or Van Wijhe appears as part of the evolving name, or in addition to it, and Van Alstyne says this indicates he came from Wijhe.
