''Harlan – In the Shadow of Jew Süss'' (German: ''Harlan – Im Schatten von Jud Süß'') is a 2008 documentary film by German director Felix Moeller about one of the most notorious Nazi German filmmakers, Veit Harlan and his family. It focuses on the "wildly varying attitudes of Harlan's children and grandchildren", and how they struggle even today with the legacy of their ancestor's work. The documentary also explores Harlan's motivations for making '' Jew Süss'', a film that ''The New York Times'' has called "perhaps the most notorious anti-Semitic movie ever made". Harlan was the only artist from the Nazi era to be charged with war crimes. The film uses "never-before-seen archival footage, unearthed film excerpts, rare home movies and new interviews". August Zirner (born 7 January 1956) is an American-Austrian actor, who starred in over 60 film productions. He is one of the most popular actors in Germany. Biography Zirner was born as son of Austrian Jewish immigrants in the United States in Urbana, Illinois. His father had fled from the Nazis. (, "Süss the Jew") is a 1940 Nazi German historical drama and propaganda film produced by Terra Film at the behest of Joseph Goebbels. It is considered one of the most antisemitic films of all time. The film was directed by Veit Harlan, who wrote the screenplay with Eberhard Wolfgang Möller and Ludwig Metzger. The leading roles were played by Ferdinand Marian and Harlan's wife Kristina Söderbaum; Werner Krauss and Heinrich George played key supporting roles. The film has been characterized as "one of the most notorious and successful pieces of antisemitic film propaganda produced in Nazi Germany."
