Happy Channel (Italy)
Happy Channel was an entertainment satellite TV owned by Mediadigit (created by Mediaset), on air from 8 March 1998 until 1 January 2006. Happy Channel ran on the Tele + platform till 30 July 2003, when SKY Italia took the place of Tele + and Stream TV, another Italian satellitar platform. The channel was based on comic films, old American films and cabaret shows and often reran old shows and sitcom produced by Mediaset in the past for its three free on air channels, Canale 5, Italia 1 and Retequattro. Shows such as ''Non è la RAI'', ''Ciao Darwin'', ''Drive In'' and ''Colpo grosso'' were rerun. Some programs were produced expressly for the channel such as ''Space Girls'' or ''I Caruso - Sitshow a Little Italy''. Mediaset Italia S.p.A., also known as Mediaset, is an Italian-based mass media company which is the largest commercial broadcaster in the country. The company is controlled by the holding company MFE - MediaForEurope. ''Ciao Darwin'' is a variety game show format created and hosted by Paolo Bonolis (Stefano Magnaghi is the co-creator), and produced by the Italian mass media company Mediaset. There are two competing teams of 50 people each, usually made up of people who fit certain opposing stereotypes. In each game two members of the audience are selected at random, one from each team, indicated by a light in front of them which remains illuminated when all the other team members' lights have gone off. The games involve contestants competing in acts of skill, intelligence and general knowledge, with deliberately ridiculous results, trying to mimic the mechanism of natural selection theorized by Charles Darwin. Some of the games are designed to humiliate the contestants, especially an assault course which was introduced with the Italian version in 2010, and the Finale which is a water tank game. Standard-definition television (SDTV, SD, often shortened to standard definition) is a television system which uses a resolution that is not considered to be either high or enhanced definition. "Standard" refers to it being the prevailing specification for broadcast (and later, cable) television in the mid- to late-20th century, and compatible with legacy analog broadcast systems. The two common SDTV signal types are 576i, with 576 interlaced lines of resolution, derived from the European-developed PAL and SECAM systems, and 480i based on the American NTSC system.
