Hanson Site
The Hanson Site includes two separate areas of Paleoindian acheological sites in the northern Bighorn Basin of Wyoming, United States. The southern Hanson I site was investigated first in 1973, finding evidence of tool working and stone flakes at a campsite. The northern Hanson II site is larger and includes the sites of lodges. Activity in these areas dates to 10,700 +/- 670 years ago to 10,080 +/- 300 years ago. The Hanson site is also of interest in paleontology, with animal fossil remains at deeper levels. Shell, Wyoming
Shell is a census-designated place (CDP) in Big Horn County, Wyoming, United States. The population was 83 at the 2010 Census. The community is named for the abundance of fossil shells located in the area. Nearby exposed formations such as the Cloverly Formation and the Morrison Formation have yielded numerous fossils of dinosaurs and other animals. Located to the west of the town is the Red Gulch Dinosaur Tracksite, a rare collection of dinosaur tracks from the Jurassic period. Shell is home to the Iowa State University geology field station. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, in 2010 the CDP has a total area of 1.1 square miles (2.96 km), all land. Bighorn Basin
The Bighorn Basin is a plateau region and intermontane basin, approximately 100 miles (160 km) wide, in north-central Wyoming in the United States. It is bounded by the Absaroka Range on the west, the Pryor Mountains on the north, the Bighorn Mountains on the east, and the Owl Creek Mountains and Bridger Mountains on the south. It is drained to the north by tributaries of the Bighorn River, which enters the basin from the south, through a gap between the Owl Creek and Bridger Mountains, as the Wind River, and becomes the Bighorn as it enters the basin. The region is semi-arid, receiving only 6–10 in (15–25 cm) of rain annually. The largest cities in the basin include the Wyoming towns of Cody, Thermopolis, Worland, and Powell. Paleontology
