Hans Van Hooft Sr.
Hans van Hooft Sr. (born November 25, 1941) is a Dutch politician. After serving on the Nijmegen city council for the Socialist Party (SP) from 1976 to 2002, he was an alderman in this city until 2010. Career Van Hooft attended the HBS in Nijmegen and studied medicine at the Catholic University of Nijmegen. During his studies he was a member of the Pacifist Socialist Party (PSP) for some time. In 1969 he finished his studies and started working in a factory. In 1971 he obtained a welding diploma. In 1970 Van Hooft became a member of the Communist Unity Movement of the Netherlands (Marxist–Leninist) (KEN-ML). When this party split in 1971, he was one of the founders of the Communist Party of the Netherlands (Marxist-Leninist) (KPN-ML), the party which would be renamed Socialist Party a year later. The Leader of the Socialist Party is the most senior politician within the Socialist Party ( nl, Socialistische Partij, SP) in the Netherlands. The post is currently held by Lilian Marijnissen, who succeeded Emile Roemer on 13 December 2017. History The Leaders outwardly act as the 'figurehead' and the main representative of the party. Within the party, they must ensure political consensus. Except during the tenure of Daan Monjé, the Leader is always the ''Lijsttrekker'' (lead candidate) of the party list at election time. Outside election time the Leader can serve as the Opposition leader. Since the tenure of Jan Marijnissen, the Leader is always the Parliamentary leader of the Socialist Party in the House of Representatives. The House of Representatives (, pronounced ; commonly referred to as the ', literally "Second Chamber of the States General") is the lower house of the bicameral parliament of the Netherlands, the States General, the other one being the Senate.
