Hans Breuer (tenor)
Hans Breuer (27 April 1868, after other sources 1870 – 11 October 1929) was a German operatic tenor and opera director. Life Born in Cologne, the son of the Cologne cathedral sculptor Peter Breuer first began a commercial apprenticeship. He studied singing with Benno Stolzenberg in Cologne on the advice of the conductor Franz Wüllner then completed his studies at the Bayreuth school with and Cosima Wagner. Breuer made his debut in 1894 in small roles at the Bayreuth Festival. His breakthrough came in 1896 as the mime in ''Siegfried''. Until 1914, he appeared regularly in this role at Bayreuth, and in 1899 also as David in '' Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg''. From 1896 to 1897, he sang at the Wrocław Opera, and in 1897 he undertook a guest performance tour of North America. Gustav Mahler
Gustav Mahler (; 7 July 1860 – 18 May 1911) was an Austro-Bohemian Romantic composer, and one of the leading conductors of his generation. As a composer he acted as a bridge between the 19th-century Austro-German tradition and the modernism of the early 20th century. While in his lifetime his status as a conductor was established beyond question, his own music gained wide popularity only after periods of relative neglect, which included a ban on its performance in much of Europe during the Nazi era. After 1945 his compositions were rediscovered by a new generation of listeners; Mahler then became one of the most frequently performed and recorded of all composers, a position he has sustained into the 21st century. ''Das Rheingold'' (; ''The Rhinegold''), WWV 86A, is the first of the four music dramas that constitute Richard Wagner's ''Der Ring des Nibelungen'' (English: ''The Ring of the Nibelung''). It was performed, as a single opera, at the National Theatre Munich on 22 September 1869, and received its first performance as part of the ''Ring'' cycle at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus, on 13 August 1876. Wagner wrote the ''Ring'' librettos in reverse order, so that ''Das Rheingold'' was the last of the texts to be written; it was, however, the first to be set to music. The score was completed in 1854, but Wagner was unwilling to sanction its performance until the whole cycle was complete; he worked intermittently on this music until 1874. Siegfried Breuer
Siegfried Breuer (24 June 1906 – 1 February 1954) was an Austrian stage and film actor and occasional film director and screenwriter. Biography Born in Vienna, Siegried was the son of Hans Breuer (1868 or 1870–1929), who was an opera singer and actor from Cologne. Performing was in the blood and he studied at the Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, some time in the early 1920s and made his stage debut at the Volkstheater, Vienna in 1924. After some 15 years of stage acting he made his screen debut in a film called ''Eins zu Eins'' in 1939 where he went on to star in over 50 films between 1939 and 1954. In 1950 he directed, wrote and starred in the film ''Der Schuß durchs Fenster'' in which he worked with Curd Jürgens. His son Siegfried Breuer Jr. and grandchildren Jacques Breuer and Pascal Breuer are also in the entertainment industry. ' (''The Woman without a Shadow''), Op. 65, is an opera in three acts by Richard Strauss with a libretto by his long-time collaborator, the poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal. It was written between 1911 and either 1915 or 1917. When it premiered at the Vienna State Opera on 10 October 1919, critics and audiences were unenthusiastic. Many cited problems with Hofmannsthal's complicated and heavily symbolic libretto. However, it is now a standard part of the operatic repertoire. Composition history Work on the opera began in 1911. The Salzburg Festival (german: Salzburger Festspiele) is a prominent festival of music and drama established in 1920. It is held each summer (for five weeks starting in late July) in the Austrian town of Salzburg, the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
