Hands-on computing is a branch of human-computer interaction research which focuses on computer interfaces that respond to human touch or expression, allowing the machine and the user to interact physically. Hands-on computing can make complicated computer tasks more natural to users by attempting to respond to motions and interactions that are natural to human behavior. HOTAS, an acronym of hands on throttle-and-stick, is the concept of placing buttons and switches on the throttle lever and flight control stick in an aircraft's cockpit. By adopting such an arrangement, pilots are capable of performing all vital functions as well as flying the aircraft without having to remove their hands from the controls. HOTAS was originally applied to military aircraft, starting with the British interceptor aircraft, the English Electric Lightning, in the late 1950s. The concept quickly spread to numerous other aircraft, such as the General Dynamics F-16 Fighting Falcon, Mikoyan MiG-29, and Eurofighter Typhoon. History and profile The magazine started as ''Radio-Electronics Special Projects'' in 1980. This was nominally a quarterly supplement to ''Radio-Electronics'' that had 10 issues from a single 1980 issue to the Spring 1984 issue. The Summer 1984 issue was renamed ''Hands-On Electronics''. It became bi-monthly in January 1986 and monthly in November 1986. The title was changed to ''Popular Electronics'' in February 1989 and was published until December 1999.
