Handball International Championships, 2007
The 2007 edition of the Handball International Championships was the VII European Championship (in French ''Championnat d’Europe des Jeux de Paume''), organized by the International Ball game Confederation, and was held at the Belgian cities of Nivelles and Buizingen during September 21 and 23. The playing countries were Belgium, France, Italy, Netherlands and the Valencian Pilota Squad representing Spain. Each own has its local variety: Belgian Balle pelote, Dutch Frisian handball, French Longue paume, Italian Pallone, and Valencian pilota. Belgian players are professionals of their sport. There are also professional Valencian pilotaris, but in Escala i corda and Raspall, not in Llargues. The varieties of the Handball sports derived from the old Jeu de paume that were played were International fronton, International game and Llargues. Valencian Pilota
Valencian pilota ( ca-valencia, pilota valenciana "Valencian ball") is a traditional handball sport played in the Valencian Community. Its origins are not known. Rules variations within the generic ''Pilota Valenciana'' category are frequent from area to area but the common trait is that the ball is struck with a bare, or almost bare, hand (only minimal protection is applied in some versions of the sport). The general rule involves two teams made from two up to five players each (the numbers depend on the particular version played). Exceptionally, individual matches are also played (mostly in Escala i corda and Raspall) between the most renowned players. The second characteristic is that it is not played against a wall. Daniel Cordier
Daniel Cordier (10 August 1920 – 20 November 2020) was a French Resistance fighter, historian and art dealer. As a member of the Camelots du Roi, he engaged with Free France in June 1940. He was secretary to Jean Moulin from 1942 to 1943, and his opinions evolved to the left. He was named a Companion of the Resistance in 1944, and, after the war, he became a historian and art dealer. He was an advocate for gay rights. Biography Daniel Bouyjou was born on 10 August 1920 in Bordeaux. His father, René Bouyjou, worked in the family coffee business, which flourished across Europe. In 1919, René married Jeanne Gauthier, although the couple divorced in 1925. Jeanne remarried in 1927 to Charles Cordier. When Daniel joined the French Resistance in London, he listed his official last name as "Bouyjou-Cordier". With René passing away in 1943, he would officially take the name "Cordier" in 1945. The International Ball game Confederation (also known as CIJB, in French ''Confederation Internationale du Jeu de Balle''), founded on May 13, 1928, is the organization that manages the common activities of the many ball games deriving from Jeu de paume. Argentina, Belgium, Colombia, Ecuador, France, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Spain, England, and Uruguay all have local federations that take part in the CIJB. Since every country has developed minor changes, the CIJB created a variety called International game that shares all the common traits of the ''direct style'' (face to face) and another variety for the ''indirect style,'' International fronton. The International game ( ca-valencia, joc internacional, ) is a ball game that is related to many sports derived from and similar to Jeu de paume. It is played in the Handball International Championships by teams from the Americas and Europe. International Fronton
One-wall handball, also known as 1-wall, wallball or international fronton is an indirect style of a ball game where the player hits a small rubber ball with their hand against a wall. The goal of the game is to score more points than the opponent. The player then hits the ball, and the ball bounces off the wall and the floor within court lines, if the opponent fails to return the ball, the player scores a point. The sport was created to bring varieties, such as American handball, Basque pelota, Patball, Gaelic handball, Pêl-Law (Welsh handball) and Valencian frontó. ''Jeu de paume'' (, ; originally spelled ; ), nowadays known as real tennis, (US) court tennis or (in France) ''courte paume'', is a ball-and-court game that originated in France. It was an indoor precursor of tennis played without racquets, and so "game of the hand", though these were eventually introduced. It is a former Olympic sport, and has the oldest ongoing annual world championship in sport, first established over 250 years ago. Llargues
Llargues (, "long ones") is the oldest Valencian pilota modality. It is played on the streets, where two teams formed by 3, 4 or 5 players throw each other the ball with the hand try to surpass an imaginary line which changes every game. There are no professional players, but it is very common in the towns and villages of some regions of the Valencian Community, such as the Marina Alta and Baixa, l'Alacantí, l'Alcoià and the Comtat . Playing area The chosen place must be a plain, straight, wide and long street, measuring 70 m at most. If one of the sides is upset the downside will be assigned to the "rest", the same if one of the sides is wider. Street is limited by two lines: the ''banca'' line and the rest line which mark the end of both sides.
