Hammel On Trial
Edward James "Ed" Hamell, performing as Hamell on Trial, is an American punk rock, anti-folk, spoken word musician, described by Righteous Babe Records as "loud, fast music informed by politics, passion, energy and intelligence, played by a guy with a sharp tongue and a wicked sense of humor". Biography Born in Syracuse, New York, Hamell spent years as a member of many bands before venturing into the realm of the solo singer-songwriter. He finally got his big break when he moved to Austin, Texas and earned a residency at first the Chicago House and then the Electric Lounge. Since then, he has released a number of albums on various labels, including Mercury Records, his own DiY label Such-A-Punch Media, and Righteous Babe Records, the label started by his longtime supporter and frequent touring companion, Ani Difranco. "Do it yourself" ("DIY") is the method of building, modifying, or repairing things by oneself without the direct aid of professionals or certified experts. PolyGram
PolyGram N.V. was a multinational entertainment company and major music record label formerly based in the Netherlands. ''Big as Life'' is an album by the American musician Hamell on Trial, released in 1994. It was put out by Doolittle Records, and picked up by Mercury the following year. "Sugarfree" was released as a single. Hamell on Trial promoted the album by touring with Syd Straw. Production Produced by Jeff Cole, ''Big as Life'' was recorded in Austin, Texas, in a warehouse room above the Electric Lounge club. Alejandro Escovedo helped Hamell with the demos. Hamell played a 1937 Gibson on the album. The instrumentation consists of guitar, sometimes accompanied by violin or bass. "Blood of the Wolf" is about a childhood friend who attempted to rob a Kentucky Fried Chicken with a fork. A cover of "Folsom Prison Blues" appears as an unlisted track. Critical reception The ''Tulsa World'' wrote that Hamell's voice "is militaristic, clipped, strident; his guitar—a 1937 small-body Gibson—is wired, alive, wincing to hold up to Hamell's infernal strumming." Bill Hicks
William Melvin Hicks (December 16, 1961 – February 26, 1994) was an American stand-up comedian, social critic, satirist, and musician. His material—encompassing a wide range of social issues including religion, politics, and philosophy—was controversial and often steeped in dark comedy. At the age of 16, while still in high school, Hicks began performing at the Comedy Workshop in Houston, Texas. During the 1980s, he toured the U.S. extensively and made a number of high-profile television appearances, but it was in the UK that he amassed a significant fan base, filling large venues during his 1991 tour. He also achieved some recognition as a guitarist and songwriter. Hicks died of pancreatic cancer on February 26, 1994, at the age of 32. New West Records is a record label based in Nashville, Tennessee, and Athens, Georgia. It had offices in Burbank, California, and Beverly Hills, California.
