Hamiltonella
''Hamiltonella'' is a genus of Enterobacteria in the Gammaproteobacteria. ''Hamiltonella defensa'' is a model organism for defensive symbiosis, protecting pea aphids from parasitoid wasps. Hamiltonella has also been found as a nutritional mutualistic endosymbiont in Whiteflies.

Hamiltonella Defensa
''Hamiltonella defensa'' (''H. defensa'') is a species of bacteria. It is maternally or sexually transmitted and lives as an endosymbiont of whiteflies and aphids, meaning that it lives within a host, protecting its host from attack. It does this through bypassing the host's immune responses by protecting its host against parasitoid wasps. However, ''H. defensa'' is only defensive if infected by a virus. ''H. defensa'' shows a relationship with '' Photorhabdus'' species, together with '' Regiella insecticola''. Together with other endosymbionts, it provides aphids protection against parasitoids. It is known to habitate ''Bemisia tabaci''. ''H. defensa'' is a member of the family Enterobacteriaceae. It can be found both extracellularly and intracellulary in ''H. defensa'' itself, and also the bacteriocytes. Enterobacterales is an order of Gram-negative, non-spore forming, facultatively anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria with the class Gammaproteobacteria. The type genus of this order is ''Enterobacter.'' The name Enterobacterales is derived from the Latin term ''Enterobacter'', referring the type genus of the order and the suffix "-ales", an ending used to denote an order. Together, Enterobacterales refers to an order whose nomenclatural type is the genus ''Enterobacter''. Pseudomonadota (synonym Proteobacteria) is a major phylum of Gram-negative bacteria. The renaming of phyla in 2021 remains controversial among microbiologists, many of whom continue to use the earlier names of long standing in the literature. Gammaproteobacteria is a class of bacteria in the phylum Pseudomonadota (synonym Proteobacteria). It contains about 250 genera, which makes it the most genera-rich taxon of the Prokaryotes. Several medically, ecologically, and scientifically important groups of bacteria belong to this class. Whiteflies are Hemipterans that typically feed on the undersides of plant leaves. They comprise the family Aleyrodidae, the only family in the superfamily Aleyrodoidea.
