Hamilton Steelers (1958–1967)
The Hamilton Steelers were a soccer team in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The team was known as Hamilton Italo-Canadian Soccer Club from 1958 to 1960 when they played in the National Soccer League, then switched their name to the Steelers in 1961 when they joined the Eastern Canada Professional Soccer League. According to the Hamilton Spectator, the club was "incorporated in 1959 and capitalized at $200,000 with common shares bearing a par value of $1." In 1961, major shareholders were John Agro and Arnold Martini. In November 1964, Primo Polianato took over as the club's major shareholder and subsequently renamed the club Primo Hamilton Soccer Club. The club remained in the Eastern Canada Professional Soccer League through 1966, then rejoined the National Soccer League in 1967 after the amalgamation of the two leagues. Hamilton is a port city in the Canadian province of Ontario. The National Soccer League was a soccer league in Canada that existed from 1926 to 1997. Teams were primarily based in the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. The league was renamed to Canadian National Soccer League in 1993 following the folding of the Canadian Soccer League, and the accepting of the Winnipeg Fury, making the league more national. In the 1960s, the Canadian National Soccer League was one of four major leagues in Canadian soccer alongside the Pacific Coast League, the Eastern Canada Professional Soccer League and the Western Canada Soccer League. Eastern Canada Professional Soccer League
The Eastern Canada Professional Soccer League was a soccer league in Canada. The league operated for six seasons from 1961 to 1966 across four cities in two Canadian provinces and one American state. In the 1960s, the Eastern Canada Professional Soccer League was one of four major leagues in Canadian soccer alongside the Pacific Coast League, the Western Canada Soccer League, and the National Soccer League of Ontario/Quebec. The league was founded in 1961 by George Gross and Peter Bosa. According to Gross, the genesis for the league was formed from a conversation the two men had during the Christmas 1960 holidays. The Challenge Trophy (french: Trophée Challenge) is a national amateur soccer cup in Canada contested by the champions of individual provincial soccer competitions. It is one of the oldest soccer competitions in Canada, being held since 1913. It is run by the Canadian Soccer Association.
