Hamilton is a city in and the county seat of Hamilton County, Texas, United States, located in the state's central region. Its population was 3,095 at the 2010 census. Geography Hamilton is located in central Hamilton County at (31.703274, –98.120359). U.S. Route 281 passes through the center of the city, leading north to Hico and south to Evant. Texas State Highway 36 (Main Street) crosses US 281 in the center of town and leads southeast to Gatesville and northwest to Comanche. Texas State Highway 22 leads northeast from Hamilton to Meridian. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which , or 2.11%, is covered by water. State Highway 36 (SH 36) runs from Freeport to Abilene. It was designated as the 36th Division Memorial Highway between Cameron and Sealy by the Texas Legislature in 1985. History SH 36 was originally proposed on November 21, 1917, as a route from Cisco to Waco. On December 20, 1917, this became part of SH 18.
