Halifax Cobequid
Halifax Cobequid was a provincial electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada, that elected one member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. It was formed in 1956 as Halifax Northwest from part of the former district of Halifax West. In 1966, the district was renamed Halifax County North West, and the following year, in 1967 it was renamed Halifax Cobequid. The Nova Scotia Liberal Party is a centrist provincial political party in Nova Scotia, Canada and the provincial section of the Liberal Party of Canada. The party currently forms the Official Opposition in Nova Scotia, under the leadership of Zach Churchill. The party was in power most recently from the 2013 election until the 2021 election. Origins The party is descended from the pre-Confederation Reformers in Nova Scotia who coalesced around Joseph Howe demanding the institution of responsible government. The Liberals (Reformers) formed several governments in the colony between 1848 and 1867. The party split during the debate on Confederation, with Howe and most other Liberals forming an Anti-Confederation Party, while supporters of confederation joined Tory Charles Tupper's Confederation Party. George Riley (Nova Scotia Politician)
George Stuart Riley (November 18, 1922 – August 28, 2002) was a Canadian politician. He represented the electoral district of Halifax Cobequid in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1970 to 1974. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party. Riley was born in Vancouver, British Columbia. A businessman, he attended Daniel Mclntyre Collegiate and the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. In 1944, he married Margaret Jane Abraham. Riley entered provincial politics in the 1970 election, defeating Progressive Conservative incumbent Gordon H. Fitzgerald by over 1000 votes in Halifax Cobequid. On November 24, 1971, Riley was appointed to the Executive Council of Nova Scotia as Minister of Public Works. He resigned from cabinet on May 16, 1972. Ronald Manning Fielding
Ronald Manning Fielding (October 7, 1896 – March 1, 1972) was a Canadian politician. He represented the electoral districts of Halifax West and Halifax Northwest in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1941 to 1960. He was a member of the Nova Scotia Liberal Party. Fielding was born in 1896 at Rockingham, Nova Scotia. He was educated at Dalhousie University, and was a lawyer by career. He was a municipal solicitor from 1931–1948, and a county prosecutor from 1933–1946. He married Marion Leck in 1945. Fielding entered provincial politics in the 1941 election, winning the Halifax West riding. He was re-elected in the 1945 and 1949 elections. In December 1949, Fielding was appointed to the Executive Council of Nova Scotia as Minister of Municipal Affairs. Fielding was re-elected in the 1953 election.
