Half-marathon
A half marathon is a road running event of —half the distance of a marathon. It is common for a half marathon event to be held concurrently with a marathon or a 5K race, using almost the same course with a late start, an early finish or shortcuts. If finisher medals are awarded, the medal or ribbon may differ from those for the full marathon. The half marathon is also known as a 21K, 21.1K or 13.1 miles, although these values are rounded and not formally correct. A half marathon world record is officially recognised by the International Association of Athletics Federations. The official IAAF world record for men is 57:31, set by Jacob Kiplimo of Uganda in November 2021 in Lisbon, Portugal, and for women is 1:04:02, set by Ruth Chepng'etich of Kenya on April 4, 2021, in Istanbul, Turkey. The New York City Half Marathon (branded as the United Airlines NYC Half) is an annual half marathon road running race from Brooklyn's Prospect Park to Manhattan's Central Park via the Manhattan Bridge, held since 2006. It passes through or by Times Square, Grand Central, and both Grand Army Plazas. New York Road Runners (NYRR) administers the race. Amedework Walelegn (born March 11, 1999) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner. In 2016, he finished 4th in the 10,000m at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz. Walelegn finished 2nd and won the silver medal at the 2017 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in the Junior Men's race. He won the Istanbul Half Marathon in 2018, breaking the Istanbul Half record. Muktar Edris (born 14 January 1994) is an Ethiopian professional long-distance runner who competes in track and cross country races. Career Muktar made his first international appearances in 2011, taking seventh place in the junior race at the 2011 IAAF World Cross Country Championships (sharing the team silver medal) and finishing fourth in the 10,000 metres at the 2011 African Junior Athletics Championships with a time of 28:44.95 minutes. Seifu Tura Abdiwak (born ) is an Ethiopian long-distance runner. He won the 2021 Chicago Marathon and placed second at the 2022 Chicago Marathon. Career Seifu Tura originally specialized in middle-distance running, having won the 3000 m event of the 2015 Janusz Kusociński Memorial in Szczecin, Poland, with a time of 7:56.22. Samuel Kamau Wanjiru (10 November 1986 – 15 May 2011) was a Kenyan long-distance runner who won the 2008 Beijing Olympics Marathon in an Olympic record time of 2:06:32; becoming the first Kenyan to win the Olympic gold in the marathon. He became the youngest gold medallist in the marathon since 1932. He set the current (as of 2020) 10,000m World Junior Record in 2005 and set the half marathon world record 3 times. Yomif Kejelcha Atomsa (born 1 August 1997) is an Ethiopian distance runner. He won a silver medal in the men’s 10,000 metres at the 2019 World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar. On 3 March 2019, Kejelcha broke the indoor mile world record with a time of 3:47.01. Rodgers Kwemoi Chumo (born 3 March 1997) is a Kenyan long-distance runner specialising in the 5000 metres and 10,000 metres. He is the 2018 Commonwealth Games bronze medallist at the longer distance. Born in Kenya's Mount Elgon District, he made his international debut in the junior race at the 2015 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, where his tenth-place finish helped the Kenyan men to the team title. As a result of this, he was signed up by the Asian Kogyo corporate team in Japan. Daniel Mateiko (born 4 August 1998) is a Kenyan long-distance runner and member of the NN Running Team. He has raced mainly between 5000m and half marathon and holds a 58:26 half marathon personal best which makes him the 9th fastest of all time over that distance. Career 2019-2020 Daniel Mateiko began competing on the track primarily at 5000m. On 21 August 2019 he finished 5th at the Kenyan Championships in Nairobi. 2020 saw Mateiko win the Eldama Ravine Half Marathon in Eldama Ravine, Kenya. 2021 Daniel Mateiko began 2021 competing on the track in 10000m. On 8 June as an invited athlete at the Ethiopian Trials in Hengelo, he raced internationally for the first time, and placed 6th in a personal best of 27:03:94.
