The Scots ( sco, Scots Fowk; gd, Albannaich) are an ethnic group and nation native to Scotland. Historically, they emerged in the early Middle Ages from an amalgamation of two Celtic-speaking peoples, the Picts and Gaels, who founded the Kingdom of Scotland (or ''Alba'') in the 9th century. In the following two centuries, the Celtic-speaking Cumbrians of Strathclyde and the Germanic-speaking Angles of north Northumbria became part of Scotland. In the High Middle Ages, during the 12th-century Davidian Revolution, small numbers of Norman nobles migrated to the Lowlands. In the 13th century, the Norse-Gaels of the Western Isles became part of Scotland, followed by the Norse of the Northern Isles in the 15th century. Alex Haddow
Alex Haddow (born 8 January 1982) is an English footballer who plays as a left sided defender or midfielder. He played in the Football League for Reading and Carlisle United before moving into non-league football following a serious knee injury. Club career Born in Fleet, Haddow began his career in the Academy at Reading. He made his debut on 24 August 1999 against Peterborough United in the League Cup, making a total of three appearances during the 1999–2000 season. He joined Barnet on a one-month loan in July 2000 but did not make any appearances and returned to Reading, though he featured in just one game over the course of the season, a 4–0 win at home to Brentford. He was released by Reading in May 2001 and joined Carlisle United three months later. After five appearances for the club he damaged his cruciate ligament and was ruled out for the rest of the season. Alexander John Haddow
Alexander John Haddow, CMG FRS FRES (27 December 1912 – 26 December 1978). was a Scottish entomologist recognised for his work at the Uganda Virus Research Institute, including the discovery of the Zika virus, and research into the insect vectors of the yellow fever virus. Other notable work included relating the incidence of Burkitt's lymphoma to climatic conditions and the discovery of several previously unknown viruses in east Africa, particularly arboviruses. Haddow spent most of his research career in Uganda, where he pioneered a method for studying the prevalence and habits of biting insects (particularly mosquitoes) known as the 24-hour catch. In 1953, Haddow was appointed the Director of the Institute and he remained in this position until his return to the University of Glasgow in 1965, where he took up largely administrative posts for the remainder of his career. David Haddow
David Haddow (12 June 1869 – 14 April 1955) was a Scottish professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He won one cap for Scotland, in 1894. Career In 1890, Haddow was involved in an altercation between players from Airdrieonians and his team, local rivals Albion Rovers. The charge was not proven. He won a Scottish Cup (1894) and two Glasgow Cups in a four-year spell with Rangers, Haddow joined Tottenham Hotspur in November 1899, as a replacement for the injured George Clawley. His debut for Spurs was in a away game in the Southern District Combinations league against Bristol City. He helped Tottenham during the course of the season towards winning the Southern Football League title. George Haddow
George Haddow (December 10, 1833 – November 11, 1919) was a Canadian politician and merchant. Born in Douglastown, New Brunswick, Canada, the son of Robert Haddow and Elizabeth Taylor, he was educated in Northumberland County and became a merchant in Dalhousie. In 1859, Haddow married Elizabeth McCurdy. He was acclaimed in a by-election, upon George Moffatt's resignation, to the House of Commons of Canada as an independent MP to represent the riding of Restigouche. Major Ross Taylor Haddow, MC, KS, JP, MA, LLB, CA, Lord Dean of Guild of Glasgow (1896–1973), was a prominent Glasgow businessman and politician. Biography Haddow took a degree in law from the University of Edinburgh, and as one of Glasgow's most senior accountants, he was appointed Lord Dean of Guild of the Merchants House of Glasgow (Glasgow's "second citizen" after the Lord Provost) and served on the city's council. William Martin Haddow
William Martin Haddow (29 March 1865 – 19 January 1945) was a Scottish socialist activist. Born in Glasgow, Haddow was educated up to the age of fourteen, then became a pupil teacher, but resigned before completing his apprenticeship to work at the Post Office. There, he was trained in electronics to work at the National Telephone Company, and in 1884 began working as an electrician at a shipyard, followed by time at sea, then at a power station. By the start of the 1890s, he had saved enough money to found his own company, Haddow & Co, which generated and distributed electricity.
