Habibi (horse)
Habibi (foaled 4 September 2009) is a New Zealand thoroughbred racehorse. She is most noted for winning the 2013 New Zealand Derby; one of only five fillies since 1980 to achieve this feat. She is trained by Donna and Dean Logan. Habibi made her raceday debut in October 2012, winning at her home track of Ruakaka. Wins at Avondale and Ellerslie followed, before she was asked to take on the top male three-year-olds over the Ellerslie Christmas Carnival. This decision proved successful, with Habibi easily winning both the Great Northern Guineas on Boxing Day and the Championship Stakes on New Year's Day. These wins made her unbeaten in five starts, and saw her become a clear favourite for the New Zealand Derby. A solid run for third in the Avondale Guineas was her only subsequent lead-up run to the Derby. Ekraar
Ekraar (foaled February 13, 1997) is a retired American Thoroughbred racehorse. Racing career Ekraar was sired by Red Ransom, who was standing stud in the United States at the time. His dam was Sacahuista, who won the 1987 Breeders' Cup Distaff race. Ekraar made his debut at a maiden race held at the Newmarket Racecourse in England on July 6, 1999, of which he finished at second place behind Race Leader. From there, he won the 1999 Vintage Stakes. His next victory wouldn't come until the following year when he won 3 consecutive races, two of which were graded races (Rose of Lancaster and Select). For the 2001 season; Ekraar raced in Dubai, France, England, and Hong Kong. His only win was at a listed race at Doncaster Racecourse called the Troy Stakes. Red Ransom
Red Ransom (foaled 1987 in Virginia, died 2009) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse. In his 2006 book ''Designing Speed in the Racehorse'', author Ken McLean wrote that Red Ransom "was a sensationally fast juvenile." Bred by Paul Mellon and raced under his Rokeby Stables banner, he was sired by the 1972 Epsom Derby winner, Roberto. His dam was Arabia, a daughter of U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee, Damascus. Conditioned for racing by Hall of Fame trainer, MacKenzie Miller, on August 3, 1989 the two-year-old Red Ransom won his debut race while setting a new Saratoga Race Course record for five furlongs. He made his second start in early September at Belmont Park, scoring another win in a six furlong allowance race. However, the colt suffered an injury to a shin that kept him out of racing until early March 1990. The New Zealand Derby is a set-weights Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds, run over a distance of 2,400 metres (12 furlongs) at Ellerslie Racecourse in Auckland, New Zealand. It is held on the first Saturday in March, as the opening day of Auckland Cup Week. The purse of the race in 2020 was $1 million. History The New Zealand Derby is an amalgamation of two races – the New Zealand Derby, run since 1860 at Riccarton, Christchurch; and the Great Northern Derby, run since 1875 at Ellerslie Racecourse in Auckland. Championship Stakes
The Championship Stakes, run at Ellerslie Racecourse, is a Group 2 horse race run for three-year-olds at Ellerslie Racecourse in Auckland, New Zealand. When the New Zealand Derby was moved from December to March in the 2005-06 season, the race was set up to be run on the second Saturday in February as the main-lead-up race, two weeks before the Derby. Before this the race had been restricted to fillies only. In 2011 the race was moved New Year's Day, with the Avondale Guineas (previously run in December at Avondale and the main Derby lead-up before 2005) moving to Ellerslie and taking the February date. Ellerslie Racecourse
Ellerslie Racecourse is the main racecourse in Auckland, New Zealand, for thoroughbred racehorses. It is an undulating, grass circuit in the suburb of Ellerslie, with a circumference of just under 1,900 metres. Racing is conducted in a clockwise (right-handed) direction. History Horses have raced at Ellerslie since 1857 when Robert Graham hosted a race meeting on his property, on the site which is now Ellerslie Racecourse. The Auckland Racing club then purchased thirty-six hectares of land from Graham in 1872 on which the course is situated. The first race meeting of the Auckland Racing Club was held at Ellerslie on 25 May 1874. At this time the racecourse was a considerable distance outside the city and it took Aucklanders up to several hours to get to the course by carriage. 2013 New Zealand Derby
The 2013 New Zealand Derby was a horse race which took place at Ellerslie Racecourse on Saturday 2 March 2013. It was the 138th running of the New Zealand Derby, and it was won by Habibi. With Silent Achiever having won the race 12 months earlier, it was the first time in the history of the race that fillies have won the Derby two years in a row. The runner-up, Fix, is also a filly, and it was just the second time fillies have finished first and second in the race in more than half a century. The race is also notable for being the fifth Derby win for jockey Vinnie Colgan - an all-time record for the race.
