Ekraar
Ekraar (foaled February 13, 1997) is a retired American Thoroughbred racehorse. Racing career Ekraar was sired by Red Ransom, who was standing stud in the United States at the time. His dam was Sacahuista, who won the 1987 Breeders' Cup Distaff race. Ekraar made his debut at a maiden race held at the Newmarket Racecourse in England on July 6, 1999, of which he finished at second place behind Race Leader. From there, he won the 1999 Vintage Stakes. His next victory wouldn't come until the following year when he won 3 consecutive races, two of which were graded races (Rose of Lancaster and Select). For the 2001 season; Ekraar raced in Dubai, France, England, and Hong Kong. His only win was at a listed race at Doncaster Racecourse called the Troy Stakes. Rose Of Lancaster Stakes
The Rose of Lancaster Stakes is a Group 3 flat horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged three years or older. It is run at Haydock Park over a distance of 1 mile, 2 furlongs and 100 yards (2,103 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in early August. History The event was established in 1986, and it was initially called the Summer Trophy. It was given its current title and promoted from Listed to Group 3 status in 1989. The Vintage Stakes is a Group 2 flat horse race in Great Britain open to two-year-old horses. It is run at Goodwood over a distance of 7 furlongs (1,408 metres), and it is scheduled to take place each year in late July or early August. History The event was established in 1975, and it was originally classed at Listed level. During the early part of its history it was sponsored by Lanson and known as the Lanson Champagne Vintage Stakes. It was given Group 3 status in 1986. The Vintage Stakes was promoted to Group 2 level in 2003, and from this point it was sponsored by Veuve Clicquot. It is currently held on the opening day of the five-day Glorious Goodwood meeting. Marcus Tregoning
Marcus Tregoning (born 31 July 1959) is an English thoroughbred racehorse trainer, based at Whitsbury Manor Stables in Whitsbury, Hampshire. He originally worked as assistant trainer to Dick Hern. Tregoning began training horses by himself in 1997 at Kingwood House Stables at Lambourn in Berkshire, before moving to Whitsbury in 2013. He won the Derby in 2006 with Sir Percy. Other notable horses include Group One winners Nayef, Ekraar, and most recently Mohaather, winner of the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood in 2020. He is married to Arabella and father of four children. The Select Stakes was a Group 3 flat horse race in Great Britain open to horses aged three years or older. It was run at Goodwood over a distance of 1 mile, 1 furlong and 192 yards (1,986 metres), and it was scheduled to take place each year in September. History The event was established in 1965, and it was originally called the Valdoe Stakes. It was initially open to horses aged four or older, and the inaugural running was contested over a mile. The following year's edition was run as a handicap. The race was restricted to three and four-year-olds in 1973, and it was re-opened to older horses in 1976. It was renamed the Select Stakes and promoted from Listed to Group 3 status in 1986. It was discontinued in 2012. Habibi (horse)
Habibi (foaled 4 September 2009) is a New Zealand thoroughbred racehorse. She is most noted for winning the 2013 New Zealand Derby; one of only five fillies since 1980 to achieve this feat. She is trained by Donna and Dean Logan. Habibi made her raceday debut in October 2012, winning at her home track of Ruakaka. Wins at Avondale and Ellerslie followed, before she was asked to take on the top male three-year-olds over the Ellerslie Christmas Carnival. This decision proved successful, with Habibi easily winning both the Great Northern Guineas on Boxing Day and the Championship Stakes on New Year's Day. These wins made her unbeaten in five starts, and saw her become a clear favourite for the New Zealand Derby. A solid run for third in the Avondale Guineas was her only subsequent lead-up run to the Derby. Stay Gold (horse)
Stay Gold (, March 24, 1994 – February 5, 2015) was a Japanese Thoroughbred racehorse who had his greatest success in international races. He was sired by Sunday Silence and was out of the mare Golden Sash by Dictus. Famously known as a "Silver Collector", running good results but unable win in major races, he eventually won the Dubai Sheema Classic and Hong Kong Vase towards the end of his career. He is also a successful sire in Japan after his retirement from racing. Early years Stay Gold made his debut at Hanshin Racecourse on December 1, 1996 but it was more than a year before he won for the first time. On September 7, 1997, he won a minor race, the " Lake Akan-ko special()", and then did not win again for more than two years. Red Ransom
Red Ransom (foaled 1987 in Virginia, died 2009) is an American Thoroughbred racehorse. In his 2006 book ''Designing Speed in the Racehorse'', author Ken McLean wrote that Red Ransom "was a sensationally fast juvenile." Bred by Paul Mellon and raced under his Rokeby Stables banner, he was sired by the 1972 Epsom Derby winner, Roberto. His dam was Arabia, a daughter of U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee, Damascus. Conditioned for racing by Hall of Fame trainer, MacKenzie Miller, on August 3, 1989 the two-year-old Red Ransom won his debut race while setting a new Saratoga Race Course record for five furlongs. He made his second start in early September at Belmont Park, scoring another win in a six furlong allowance race. However, the colt suffered an injury to a shin that kept him out of racing until early March 1990. A stud animal is a registered animal retained for breeding. The terms for the male of a given animal species (stallion, bull, rooster, etc.) usually imply that the animal is intact—that is, not castrated—and therefore capable of siring offspring. A handicap race in horse racing is a race in which horses carry different weights, allocated by the handicapper. A better horse will carry a heavier weight, to give it a disadvantage when racing against slower horses. The skill in betting on a handicap race lies in predicting which horse can overcome its handicap. Although most handicap races are run for older, less valuable horses, this is not true in all cases; some great races are handicaps, such as the Grand National steeplechase in England and the Melbourne Cup in Australia.
