HMS Prince Of Orange (1734)
HMS ''Prince of Orange'' was a 70-gun third rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, built by Richard Stacey to the 1719 Establishment at Deptford Dockyard, and launched on 5 September 1734. In 1748, ''Prince of Orange'' was cut down to a 60-gun ship, a role in which it remained until being converted into a sheer hulk in 1772. The ''Prince of Orange'' was part of the British Fleet at the capture of Louisbourg in 1758. David Ramsay, fur trader, revolutionary War soldier, and Indian-killer was a crew member of ''Prince of Orange'' at both the Battle of Louisbourg in 1758 and the battle of Quebec in 1759. 1719 Establishment
The 1719 Establishment was a set of mandatory requirements governing the construction of all Royal Navy warships capable of carrying more than 20 naval long guns. It was designed to bring economies of scale through uniform vessel design, and ensure a degree of certainty about vessel capability once at sea, and was applied to all vessels from the first-rate to the fifth-rate. In the rating system of the Royal Navy, a third rate was a ship of the line which from the 1720s mounted between 64 and 80 guns, typically built with two gun decks (thus the related term two-decker). Years of experience proved that the third rate ships embodied the best compromise between sailing ability (speed, handling), firepower, and cost. So, while first-rates and second-rates were both larger and more powerful, third-rate ships were the optimal configuration. Richard Stacey
Richard Stacey (1663–1743) was an English shipbuilder and ship designer employed by the Royal Navy at several dockyards but predominantly Deptford. Life He was probably apprenticed as a shipwright around 1677. He was appointed a master mastmaker and boat-builder at Plymouth Dockyard by the Royal Navy in November 1695. In 1698 he transferred briefly to Kinsale where he launched HMS Kinsale at Cork Docks in Ireland. He then worked for a few months at Sheerness Dockyard in 1705 before being appointed Master Shipwright at Woolwich Dockyard in November 1705. He was personally responsible for designing the Flamborough class of ship in 1706. Deptford Dockyard
Deptford Dockyard was an important naval dockyard and base at Deptford on the River Thames, operated by the Royal Navy from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. It built and maintained warships for 350 years, and many significant events and ships have been associated with it. A hulk is a ship that is afloat, but incapable of going to sea. Hulk may be used to describe a ship that has been launched but not completed, an abandoned wreck or shell, or to refer to an old ship that has had its rigging or internal equipment removed, retaining only its buoyant qualities. Richard Short (military Artist)
Richard Short (fl. bef. 1750, aft. 1766) was a military artist, best known for sketches he made of Quebec City, shortly after its capture by British forces. The appearance of many of the old French régime's principal buildings are known only from Short's sketches. He is also known for his sketches of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and notable naval engagements of the times. Life The ''Dictionary of Canadian Biography'' describes Short as a military officer, noting that in the days before photography officers were encouraged to learn how to paint or draw images for military purposes.
