HMS Peregrine Galley (1700)
HMS ''Peregrine Galley'' was a 20-gun sixth-rate ship of the Royal Navy, built in 1699-1700 at Sheerness Dockyard by Master Shipwright William Lee to a design by Rear-Admiral the Marquis of Carmarthen. She was generally employed as a Royal yacht and in 1716 she was officially renamed HMS ''Carolina'' and converted to a permanent Royal yacht. In May 1733 she was rebuilt by Richard Storey at Deptford Dockyard as the Royal yacht and again renamed, this time as ''Royal Caroline''. In 1739 she ceased to be the Royal yacht and resumed her classification as a Sixth Rate. In 1749 a new ''Royal Caroline'' was built to replace her. She reverted to being a naval sloop under the name HMS ''Peregrine'' and served until her loss on or about 28 December 1761. HMY Royal Caroline (1750)
HMY ''Royal Caroline'' was a ship-rigged royal yacht. She was ordered in 1749 to replace HMY ''Carolina'' as Britain's principal royal yacht. She was built at Deptford Dockyard under the supervision of Master Shipwright John Hollond to a design by Surveyor of the Navy Joseph Allin. She was launched on 29 January 1750 and was broken up 70 years later, in 1820. Service ''Royal Caroline'' was first commissioned under Captain Sir Charles Molloy, who commanded her until 1753. Captain Sir Piercy Brett took over in 1754, and in August 1761 she became the flagship of Admiral of the Fleet Lord Anson, with Captain Peter Denis as his flag-captain. Edward Knowles (1744 – c. 28 December 1761) was an officer of the Royal Navy, who saw service during the Seven Years' War. Knowles was born into a distinguished naval family, with his father rising to the rank of Admiral (Royal Navy), admiral and receiving a baronetcy for his services. Edward followed him into the navy, and served with several important officers in operations during the Seven Years' War, which he spent mostly in North American waters. He supported the Siege of Louisbourg (1758), sieges of Louisbourg and Battle of the Plains of Abraham, Quebec and made the acquaintance of the natural philosopher John Robison (physicist), John Robison, who spent some time as his mathematics tutor. Vice-Admiral Sir Charles Hardy (1680 – 27 November 1744), also known as Sir Charles Hardy the Elder, was a Royal Navy officer of the eighteenth century. Hardy entered the Royal Navy in 1695, joining his cousin Captain Thomas Hardy's ship HMS ''Pendennis''. Promoted to lieutenant in 1701, he served in several ships of the line before being promoted to commander in 1705. Hardy commanded sloops in the English Channel, Mediterranean and North Seas, before taking command of HMS ''Dunwich'' in 1709, in which he was promoted to post captain. Hardy subsequently served for a year at Jamaica before commanding two ships during the Great Northern War between 1718 and 1720. Galfridus Walpole
Galfridus Walpole (1683 – 7 August 1726) was a Royal Navy officer, politician and postmaster general of the Kingdom of Great Britain. He lost his right arm after a naval battle against the French in Vado Bay, Italy, in 1711 and commanded ships for another nine years. He sat in the House of Commons from 1715 to 1721, when he took office as joint postmaster general. Early life Walpole was born in 1683, the son of Robert Walpole and Mary Burwell of Houghton, Norfolk, and was the younger brother of the politician Sir Robert Walpole. Deptford Dockyard was an important naval dockyard and base at Deptford on the River Thames, operated by the Royal Navy from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries. It built and maintained warships for 350 years, and many significant events and ships have been associated with it. Sheerness Dockyard also known as the Sheerness Station was a Royal Navy Dockyard located on the Sheerness peninsula, at the mouth of the River Medway in Kent. It was opened in the 1660s and closed in 1960. Location In the Age of Sail, the Royal Navy would often establish shore facilities close to safe anchorages where the fleet would be based in home waters. Thomas Osborne, 1st Duke of Leeds, (20 February 1632 – 26 July 1712), was a prominent English politician. Under King Charles II (and known at the time as Lord Danby), he was the leading figure in the government for around five years in the mid-1670s.
