Sable Island
Sable Island (french: île de Sable, literally "island of sand") is a small Canadian island situated southeast of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and about southeast of the closest point of mainland Nova Scotia in the North Atlantic Ocean. The island is staffed year round by three federal government staff, rising during summer months when research projects and tourism increase. Notable for its role in early Canadian history and the Sable Island horse, the island is protected and managed by Parks Canada, which must grant permission prior to any visit. Sir Humphrey Gilbert (c. 1539 – 9 September 1583) was an English adventurer, explorer, member of parliament and soldier who served during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and was a pioneer of the English colonial empire in North America and the Plantations of Ireland. Hoy (boat)
A hoy is a small sloop-rigged coasting ship or a heavy barge used for freight, usually with a burthen of about 60 tons ( bm). The word derives from the Middle Dutch ''hoey''. In 1495, one of the Paston Letters included the phrase, ''An hoye of Dorderycht'' (a hoy of Dordrecht), in such a way as to indicate that such contact was then no more than mildly unusual. Sixth-rate
In the rating system of the Royal Navy used to categorise sailing warships, a sixth-rate was the designation for small warships mounting between 20 and 28 carriage-mounted guns on a single deck, sometimes with smaller guns on the upper works and sometimes without. It thus encompassed ships with up to 30 guns in all. In the first half of the 18th century the main battery guns were 6-pounders, but by mid-century these were supplanted by 9-pounders. 28-gun sixth rates were classed as frigates, those smaller as 'post ships', indicating that they were still commanded by a full ('post') captain, as opposed to sloops of 18 guns and less under commanders. French Corvette Sans Pareille (1798)
''Sans Pareille'' was a privateer that the French Navy purchased off the stocks in 1797 or 1798, and that was launched in 1798. The Royal Navy captured her in 1801 off Sardinia, but laid her up when she reached Britain in 1802. She was sold in 1805. Early service ''Sans Pareille'' was one of three corvettes at the battle of the Malta convoy on 18 February 1800. ''Sans Pareille'' and the other two corvettes escaped before the engagement began. Capture On 20 January 1801, was some 40 leagues off Sardinia when she captured ''Sans Pareille'' after a chase of nine hours. French Brig Friedland (1807)
''Friedland'' was the name-ship of her class of French '' Illyrien'' or ''Friedland''-class brig. She was built at Venice and launched in June 1807. The Royal Navy captured her a year later and took her into service as HMS ''Delight''. She served in the Mediterranean and was sold in 1814. ''Friedland'' ''Friedland'' initially bore the name ''Illyrien'', but had her name changed to ''Vendicare'' in early 1807. Then she received a second name change, to ''Friedland'', after launch, to commemorate the Emperor Napoleon's victory on 14 June at the battle of Friedland. Brig
A brig is a type of sailing vessel defined by its rig: two masts which are both square rig, square-rigged. Brigs originated in the second half of the 18th century and were a common type of smaller merchant vessel or warship from then until the latter part of the 19th century. In commercial use, they were gradually replaced by fore-and-aft rigged vessels such as schooners, as owners sought to reduce crew costs by having rigs that could be handled by fewer men. In Royal Navy use, brigs were retained for training use when the battle fleets consisted almost entirely of iron-hulled steamships. Brigs were prominent in the coasting coal trade of British waters. 4,395 voyages to London with coal were recorded in 1795.
