HK Riga was a Latvian ice hockey team. They played in the 1997-98 Eastern European Hockey League season. History The club was founded in 1997, and began playing in the Eastern European Hockey League. Their stay in the EEHL lasted only one year, and the team folded after their first season. HK Riga finished with an 8-27-1 record, with 82 goals for, and 177 goals against. Riga (; lv, Rīga , liv, Rīgõ) is the capital and largest city of Latvia and is home to 605,802 inhabitants which is a third of Latvia's population. Eastern European Hockey League
Eastern European Hockey League (EEHL) was a regional ice hockey league which existed from 1995 to 2004. History The league was formed in 1995 by Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania and Ukraine, to provide a higher-level competition for teams from those countries. In some years, the league also included teams from Poland and Russia. Besides the main tournament for professional ice hockey teams, the league also had junior championships in several age groups. In 2004, it was dissolved. Instead, two teams from Latvia ( Metalurgs Liepāja and Rīga 2000) and one team from Ukraine (Sokil Kyiv) joined the Belarusian Extraliga. There was temporarily a period where the Belarusian Extraliga was closed to foreign teams, but that has since changed as Metalurgs Liepāja, Dinamo/Juniors Rīga, and Sokil Kyiv became members of the league. Ice Hockey
Ice hockey (or simply hockey) is a team sport played on ice skates, usually on an ice skating rink with lines and markings specific to the sport. It belongs to a family of sports called hockey. Agris Saviels
Agris Saviels (born January 15, 1982) is a Latvian former professional ice hockey defenseman. He last played for HK Mogo of the Latvian Hockey League (LAT). Playing career Saviels was drafted 63rd overall in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft by the Colorado Avalanche. Prior to be drafted, Saviels played in his native country Latvia with HK Lido Nafta Rīga before traveling to North America to play Junior with the Notre Dame Hounds and then the Owen Sound Attack of the Ontario Hockey League. Saviels was signed by the Colorado Avalanche on July 23, 2002, but never played a game with the team, playing with their affiliate the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League. Since the 2005–06 season, Saviels has played in Europe in the Belarus, Russian, Slovak, Latvian and Danish leagues. Edgars Masaļskis
Edgars Masaļskis (born 31 March 1980) is a Latvian ice hockey coach and former player. Playing as a goaltender, Masaļskis represented the Latvian national team, and has played for a number of clubs, with five seasons in Liepājas Metalurgs as his longest stay at any club. He retired after the 2016–17 season, and joined Dinamo Riga's coaching staff on 2 October 2017. International play Masaļskis has played twelve World Hockey Championships, four Winter Olympic Games tournaments and two World Junior Hockey Championships tournaments. Aleksejs Širokovs (born 20 February 1981) is a Latvian professional ice hockey player currently playing for Dresdner Eislöwen of the DEL2. Most of his professional playing career Širokovs spent in Latvian Hockey League's club HK Liepājas Metalurgs, twice becoming Latvia's champion. From 2004 until 2007 Širokovs played in several Russian Superleague and Russian Major League clubs, but played the 2007-08 season in Belarusian Extraliga club Metallurg Zhlobin. Georgijs Pujacs (born June 11, 1981 in Riga, Soviet Union) is a Latvian ice hockey defenceman who currently plays for Dresdner Eislöwen of the DEL2. Playing career Pujacs was drafted by Boston Bruins as the 264th pick in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft, after a strong performance in 1999 Division 1 European Junior Championships. After being drafted, he played minor league ice hockey in North America for a year but did not reach the NHL. He then returned to Latvia and has mostly played for Latvian teams in the Latvian League and Eastern European Hockey League. In July 2006, Pujacs signed a two-year contract with Khimik Moscow Oblast of Russian Elite League, then joined HC Lada Togliatti on 6 November 2007.
