Latvijas Berzs Riga is an ice hockey team in Riga, Latvia. They play in the Latvian Hockey League, and formerly played in the Pervaya Liga. History In the early 1960s was in the furniture manufacturing company, Latvijas Bērzs (today Latvijas Finieris), founded an ice hockey team. They participated first participated the Latvian SSR Championship in 1962. They won the Latvian Championship ten times in the 1970s and 1980s The club played in the Vtoraya Liga from 1974-1978, but were promoted to the Pervaya Liga for two years (1979 and 1980) before they were again relegated to the Vtoraya Liga. After the Soviet Union broke up, the club participated in the now professional Latvian Hockey League. They won the league title in 1997. The Latvian Hockey Higher League ( lv, Latvijas Virslīgas hokeja čempionāts), also known as the Optibet Hockey League ( lv, Optibet hokeja līga) since 2017 due to sponsor (commercial), sponsorship by Optibet, is the top tier Sports league, league of ice hockey in Latvia currently comprising seven teams. Artūrs Irbe
Artūrs Irbe (born 2 February 1967) is a Latvian professional ice hockey coach and former goaltender. Born during the Soviet era, Irbe played for various Soviet league teams and the Soviet Union national team before moving to North America in 1991. Irbe played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the San Jose Sharks, Dallas Stars, Vancouver Canucks and Carolina Hurricanes. In 2004 Irbe returned to Europe to play until he retired in 2007. He has served as a goaltending coach with Dinamo Riga, the Washington Capitals and the Buffalo Sabres, as well as internationally with the Latvia men's national ice hockey team. While serving with Buffalo in 2014 at the age of 47, he suited up after the injury of Michal Neuvirth to be the backup goaltender for Jhonas Enroth. Mārtiņš Karsums (born 26 February 1986) is a Latvian professional ice hockey right winger currently playing for MHk 32 Liptovský Mikuláš of the Slovak Extraliga. Karsums was selected in the second round, 64th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins. He has played in the National Hockey League for the Bruins and the Tampa Bay Lightning. Oskars Bārtulis (russian: Оскарс Бартулис; born January 21, 1987) is a retired Latvian professional ice hockey defenceman. He has previously played parts of two seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Philadelphia Flyers. In 2018, Bartulis became a Russian citizen and therefore ineligible to play for Latvia at national level.
