HD 108874 b is a gas giant announced in 2003. The orbit lies in the star's habitable zone. It is expected that any moons orbiting this planet are enriched in carbon, and are thus quite different from the silicate-rich bodies in the Solar System. The planet is possibly in a 4 : 1 orbital resonance with HD 108874 c. Discovery The jovian planet HD 108874 b was discovered by the US-based team led by Paul Butler, Geoffrey Marcy, Steven Vogt, and Debra Fischer. A total of 20 radial velocity observations, obtained at the W. M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii between 1999 and 2002, were used to make the discovery. Coma Berenices is an ancient asterism in the northern sky, which has been defined as one of the 88 modern constellations. It is in the direction of the fourth galactic quadrant, between Leo and Boötes, and it is visible in both hemispheres. HD 28185 b is an extrasolar planet 128 light-years away from Earth in the constellation of Eridanus (constellation), Eridanus. The planet was discovered orbiting the Sun-like star HD 28185 in April 2001 as a part of the CORALIE survey for southern extrasolar planets, and its existence was independently confirmed by the Magellan Planet Search Survey in 2008. HD 28185 b orbits its sun in a circular orbit that is at the inner edge of its star's habitable zone. Discovery HD 28185 b was discovered by detecting small periodic variations in the radial velocity of its parent star caused by the gravity, gravitational attraction of the planet. Debra Ann Fischer is a professor of astronomy at Yale University researching detection and characterization of exoplanets. She was part of the team to discover the first known multiple-planet system. Education Fischer received her degree from the University of Iowa in 1975, a masters of science from San Francisco State University in 1992, and her PhD from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1998. Research and career Fischer has co-authored over 100 papers on dwarf stars and sub-stellar mass objects in the galactic neighborhood, including many on extrasolar planets. Steven Scott Vogt (born December 20, 1949) is an American astronomer of German descent whose main interest is the search for extrasolar planets. He is credited, along with R. Paul Butler, for discovering Gliese 581 g, the first potentially habitable planet outside of the Solar System. He is a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and is known worldwide for designing and building HIRES, a high-resolution optical spectrometer mounted permanently on the W. M. Keck Observatory 10-meter telescope on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. HIRES is an instrument critical to observations and discoveries about the planets, stars, galaxies, and the universe. Geoffrey William Marcy (born September 29, 1954) is an American astronomer. He was an early influence in the field of exoplanet detection, discovery, and characterization. Marcy was a professor of astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley, and an adjunct professor of physics and astronomy at San Francisco State University. Marcy and his research teams discovered many extrasolar planets, including 70 out of the first 100 known exoplanets and also the first planetary system around a Sun-like star, Upsilon Andromedae. HD 108874
HD 108874 is a yellow dwarf star (spectral type G5 V) in the constellation of Coma Berenices. It is 195 light years from Earth and has two extrasolar planets that are possibly in a 9:2 orbital resonance. Star HD 108874 is probably billions of years older than the Sun however the age is not well constrained. The star has a temperature of about 5600 K. Its metallicity is 1.18 times that of the Sun, meaning it has greater iron abundance relative to hydrogen and helium. It has about the same mass as the Sun, but the radius is probably greater.
