HD 108874
HD 108874 is a yellow dwarf star (spectral type G5 V) in the constellation of Coma Berenices. It is 195 light years from Earth and has two extrasolar planets that are possibly in a 9:2 orbital resonance. Star HD 108874 is probably billions of years older than the Sun however the age is not well constrained. The star has a temperature of about 5600 K. Its metallicity is 1.18 times that of the Sun, meaning it has greater iron abundance relative to hydrogen and helium. It has about the same mass as the Sun, but the radius is probably greater. Planetary system In 2003, the jovian planet HD 108874 b was discovered by the US-based team led by R. Paul Butler, Paul Butler, Geoffrey Marcy, Steven Vogt, and Debra Fischer. ''Hipparcos'' was a scientific satellite of the European Space Agency (ESA), launched in 1989 and operated until 1993. It was the first space experiment devoted to precision astrometry, the accurate measurement of the positions of celestial objects on the sky. This permitted the first high-precision measurements of the intrinsic brightnesses (compared to the less precise apparent brightness), proper motions, and parallaxes of stars, enabling better calculations of their distance and tangential velocity. Stellar rotation is the angular motion of a star about its axis. The rate of rotation can be measured from the spectrum of the star, or by timing the movements of active features on the surface. The rotation of a star produces an equatorial bulge due to centrifugal force. As stars are not solid bodies, they can also undergo differential rotation. Debra Ann Fischer is a professor of astronomy at Yale University researching detection and characterization of exoplanets. She was part of the team to discover the first known multiple-planet system. Education Fischer received her degree from the University of Iowa in 1975, a masters of science from San Francisco State University in 1992, and her PhD from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1998. Research and career Fischer has co-authored over 100 papers on dwarf stars and sub-stellar mass objects in the galactic neighborhood, including many on extrasolar planets. Steven Scott Vogt (born December 20, 1949) is an American astronomer of German descent whose main interest is the search for extrasolar planets. He is credited, along with R. Paul Butler, for discovering Gliese 581 g, the first potentially habitable planet outside of the Solar System. He is a professor of astronomy and astrophysics at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and is known worldwide for designing and building HIRES, a high-resolution optical spectrometer mounted permanently on the W.
