Gurucharan College, Silchar is affiliated under Assam University (Central University). History Gurucharan College, Silchar, abbreviated as G.C. College, was established on 15 July 1935. Originally the college was housed in a deserted bungalow of Promode Chandra Dutta at Rangpur on the bank of river Barak. Unfortunately, riverbank erosion began to engulf the college premises, and Gurucharan College was shifted temporarily to the campus of Silchar Normal School. Silchar
Silchar is a city and the headquarters of the Cachar district of the state of Assam, India. It is located south east of Guwahati. It was founded by Captain Thomas Fisher in 1832 when he shifted the headquarters of Cachar to Janiganj in Silchar. It earned the moniker “Island of Peace” from Indira Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India. Silchar is the site of the world's first polo club and the first competitive polo match. In 1985, an Air India flight from Kolkata to Silchar became the world's first all-women crew flight. Silchar was a tea town and Cachar Club, Cachar club was the meeting point for tea planters. Kalika Prasad Bhattacharya
Kalika Prasad Bhattacharya (11 September 1970 – 7 March 2017) was an Indian folk singer and researcher. He was born and raised in Silchar, Assam. He went on to study comparative literature at Jadavpur University. His musical inspiration was his uncle Ananta Bhattacharya. In 1999, he co-founded the band Dohar with the intent to revive the folk music tradition of Northern and Eastern Bengal. He also contributed music to a number of movies. Kabindra Purkayastha (born 15 December 1931) is a former union minister of state of India. He served as minister of state for communication in Atal Bihari Vajpayee government from 1998 to 1999. He is a senior leader of Bharatiya Janata Party in Assam, India. He was born in 1931 in Kamarkhal in Sylhet district now in Bangladesh and studied M.A. at Gauhati University.
