Gunboat Sheds, Copenhagen
The Gunboat Sheds (''Kanonbådsskurene'') is a row of 32 black-painted wooden sheds located on the east coast of Frederiksholm, part of Holmen, in Copenhagen, Denmark. Built in the first half of the 19th century for the naval base which used to occupy the grounds, they have now been adapted for other use. They were listed in 1964. History The Gunboat Sheds owe their existence and name to the so-called gunboats which were built after the Danish naval fleet had been captured at the Holmen Naval Base by the Royal British Navy on 21 October 1807. The gunboats were used in the last stage of the English Wars, now known as the Gunboat War. The small gunboats were employed against the conventional Royal British Navy. Built to provide on-land protection for the gunboats when they were not in use, the sheds were mainly built in around 1830. Each shed could accommodate two gunboats. The English Wars ( da, Englandskrigene, sv, Englandskrigen) were a series of conflicts pitting the United Kingdom and Sweden against Denmark-Norway as part of the Napoleonic Wars. It is named after England, the common name in Scandinavia for the United Kingdom, which declared war on Denmark-Norway due to disagreements over the neutrality of Danish trade and to prevent the Danish fleet falling into the hands of the First French Empire. Nyholm Central Guardhouse
Nyholm Central Guardhouse is a historic building at Holmen, Copenhagen, Holmen in Copenhagen, Denmark. It was built in 1745 as part of the Holmen Naval Base, Nyholm Naval Base which had been established on reclaimed land at the site in 1690. History The first guardhouse at Nyholm was located inside the Neptune Battery (now Sixtus Battery). When the building had become outdated and the grounds were being restructured, Naval Secretary Frederik Danneskiold-Samsøe proposed the construction of a new building to King Christian VI of Denmark , Christian VI. The plans were approved in February 1744 and the project was assigned to Philip de Lange who served as Naval Master Builder for almost 30 years and also contributed with many other buildings at Nyholm, and the building was completed the following year. ''DAGEN'' (commonly written ''Dagen'') was a Danish newspaper which published for only 41 issues, from 22 October 2002 to 6 December 2002. ''DAGEN'' was the first new newspaper in almost 50 years in Denmark. History and profile On 6 December 2002, ''Dagen'' had a debt of 34.9 million DKK, and bankruptcy was declared on 13 December 2002. Peter Linck was the creator of the newspaper, and the editor was Kresten Schultz Jørgensen. The newspaper had more media coverage than it itself was able to cover about its bankruptcy. The coverage from other media was intense. Many used the newspaper's own mottos for jokes about its bankruptcy, a famous one was "''til folk som kan læse, fra folk som ikke kan regne''" (Danish: "''for people who can read, from people who can't count''") as a reference to the overwhelming bankruptcy it suffered. Gunboat War
The Gunboat War (, ; 1807–1814) was a naval conflict between Denmark–Norway and the British during the Napoleonic Wars. The war's name is derived from the Danish tactic of employing small gunboats against the materially superior Royal Navy. In Scandinavia it is seen as the later stage of the English Wars, whose commencement is accounted as the First Battle of Copenhagen in 1801. The Royal Navy (RN) is the United Kingdom's naval warfare force. Holmen Naval Base
Naval Station Holmen ( da, Flådestation Holmen) is one of several naval stations of the Royal Danish Navy, supplementing the two Danish naval bases in Frederikshavn and Korsør. Founded in the late 17th century, it is also a visitor attraction with many historical buildings that has played a vital role in the history of Denmark as well as Copenhagen. The naval base used to occupy the entire area of Holmen, which was in fact created by a series of landfills to house it, but is now confined to its northernmost island of Nyholm. Holmen was for many years the base of command for the Danish Naval Flag and has through the times been called Nyholm (which is the name of one of the islands), the Navy's Base and Naval Station or Naval Base, Copenhagen.
