Gulpen-Wittem
Gulpen-Wittem (; li, Gullepe-Wittem ) is a municipality in the southeastern Netherlands (in the province of Limburg) with inhabitants as of . Gulpen-Wittem came into being after the merger of the municipalities Gulpen and Wittem. This took place after a request of both municipalities. At the time of the merger, both municipalities had about 8000 inhabitants, although Wittem was bigger than Gulpen. The town hall was situated in Gulpen, and has kept its function as town hall in the new municipality. The former town hall of Wittem was situated in a manor house in Mechelen since 1986, which is now being used as a "nursing hostel". The municipality is rural, with many castles, half-timbered houses and old monumental farms. Yearly, Gulpen-Wittem attracts many tourists from the entire country because of its relatively sloping landscape, especially during the summer. Mechelen, Netherlands
Mechelen (; li, Mechele ) is a town in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is a part of the municipality of Gulpen-Wittem, and lies about 13 km south of Heerlen. History The village was first mentioned in 1133 as "de Mechluns", and means "mighty place". It was sometimes called Klein-Mechelen (little Mechelen) to distinguish from Mechelen. Mechelen developed around a large farm which was donated to the Sovereign Military Order of Malta by Henry III, Duke of Limburg. Until 1795, it was a '' heerlijkheid'' except for the commandery and a small part of the village which formed an independent enclave. The Heerenhof is the remainder of the commandery and farm. In 1797, it became private property. In 1986, it became the town hall. The complex has experienced several fires, and the oldest building dates from 1754. Slenaken
Slenaken ( Limburgish: ''Sjlennich'') is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. Slenaken was a separate municipality until 1982, when it was merged with Wittem. History On a bank of the River Gulp, just to the south of Slenaken, is the "grinding stone of Slenaken" (''"Slijpsteen van Slenaken"''), a large flint boulder used in the Neolithic period to polish stone axe heads. The earliest surviving written record of Slenaken dates from 1252. At that time, along with the parish, Slenaken comprised a handful of houses and farmsteads. At some point before 1428 a small chapel was constructed. There is a legend that this was triggered when a shepherd saw one of his sheep kneeling before a "cross" in a burning bush.Gerard C. Eyserheide
Eyserheide (English: ''Eys heathland'', Limburgish: ''Ezerhei'') is a hamlet in the southeastern Netherlands. It is located close to the village of Eys in the municipality of Gulpen-Wittem, Limburg, around 15 km east of Maastricht. The name refers to a former heathland in the area. The village has a population of 90 people. Together with the neighboring hamlets of Elkenrade and Mingersberg, it is located on the plateau of Ubachsberg. The village is known for the Eyserbosweg, a steep hill to the south of the village which is part of the Amstel Gold Race. To the west of the village is the forest Eyserbos. Epen (; li, Ieëpe ) is a village in the southern part of the Dutch province of Limburg. It is a part of the municipality of Gulpen-Wittem, and lies about 15 km southwest of Kerkrade. Beutenaken ( li, Böätenake) is a hamlet in the southeastern Netherlands. It is part of the village of Slenaken in the municipality of Gulpen-Wittem, Limburg, about 20 km east of Maastricht. Older names for the village are Bottinachs, Butenacho and Butenachen. The village is built as a linear settlement in the valley of the Gulp river, on a road connecting Waterop with Slenaken. Gulpen
Gulpen (; li, Gullepe ) is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is approximately midway between the Dutch city of Maastricht and the German city of Aachen. Gulpen was a separate municipality until 1999, when it merged with Wittem. The newly formed municipality is called Gulpen-Wittem. The village itself derives its name from the river Gulp, which runs straight through the centre of the village and characterises the townscape. There is a Romanesque tower in the old cemetery, which dates from the 11th Century and is the only still existing part of a mediaeval village church. Considering its construction (its walls are up to 2 metres thick) and its location, it probably also served as defence tower, where the local villagers could go in case of danger. The former rectory, which leans against the tower, dates from 1732. It is now being let as luxurious group accommodation. Wijlre
Wijlre ( or ; li, Wielder) is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. It is located in the municipality of Gulpen-Wittem. History The village was first mentioned in 1075 as Wilere, and means "farm or hamlet". Wijlre developed in the Middle Ages between the Geul and the flank of the Ubachsberg. It became an independent parish in 1262. Wijlre Castle was built shortly after 1652 on the location of medieval fortified building. Three servant's wings with mansard roofs were added in the 18th century. The garden were designed in 1810. In 1939, a casemate was built near the entrance to the castle. The Catholic St Gertrudis Church was built between 1835 and 1839 as a replacement of its 13th century predecessor. In 1896, the church was enlarged by Pierre Cuypers. Between 1924 and 1925, the eastern side with tower was added. Wijlre was home to 420 people in 1840. In 1853, a joint railway station with Gulpen opened on the Aachen to Maastricht railway line. Wahlwiller ( li, Wilder ) is a village in the Dutch province of Limburg. Reijmerstok () is a village in the municipality Gulpen-Wittem in the Dutch province of Limburg. It lies southwest of Gulpen and counts about 600 inhabitants. In the village several half timbered houses can be found. There also is a viaduct, which was part of the tramline between the Dutch city of Maastricht and the German city of Aachen that was in use from 1925 until 1938.
