Guerbet () is a France-based manufacturer of contrast agents used in medical imaging. The company was founded in 1926 by André Guerbet, the son of Marcel Guerbet who in 1901 discovered Lipiodol – the first Iodinated contrast, iodinated X-ray contrast agent. In 2017 Guerbet’s revenues were €807.1 million. It employs over 2,700 people worldwide and has manufacturing facilities in France, Ireland, Canada, Macedonia, the United States and Brazil. The company’s headquarters are located in Villepinte, Seine-Saint-Denis, Villepinte, a suburb of Paris and its shares are included in the CAC Small stock index. In July 2015, Guerbet announced the takeover of Mallinckrodt's contrast media and application systems divisions. The acquisition was completed in November 2015. Lipiodol
Lipiodol, also known as ethiodized oil, is a poppyseed oil used by Injection (medicine), injection as a radio-opaque contrast agent that is used to outline structures in radiological investigations. It is used in Transcatheter arterial chemoembolization, chemoembolization applications as a contrast agent in follow-up imaging. Lipiodol is also used in lymphangiography, the imaging of the lymphatic system. It has an additional use in gastric varices, gastric variceal obliteration as a dilutant that does not affect polymerization of cyanoacrylate. Indications Recently, there has been an increasing interest in the use of Lipiodol as a therapeutic agent in the management of unexplained infertility, using a procedure called Lipiodol flushing. A contrast agent (or contrast medium) is a substance used to increase the contrast of structures or fluids within the body in medical imaging. Contrast agents absorb or alter external electromagnetism or ultrasound, which is different from radiopharmaceuticals, which emit radiation themselves. In x-rays, contrast agents enhance the radiodensity in a target tissue or structure. In MRIs, contrast agents shorten (or in some instances increase) the relaxation times of nuclei within body tissues in order to alter the contrast in the image. Contrast agents are commonly used to improve the visibility of blood vessels and the gastrointestinal tract. Iodinated Contrast
Iodinated contrast is a form of intravenous radiocontrast agent containing iodine, which enhances the visibility of vascular structures and organs during radiographic procedures. Some pathologies, such as cancer, have particularly improved visibility with iodinated contrast. The radiodensity of iodinated contrast is 25–30 Hounsfield units (HU) per milligram of iodine per milliliter at a tube voltage of 100–120 kVp. Types Iodine-based contrast media are usually classified as ionic or nonionic. Both types are used most commonly in radiology due to their relatively harmless interaction with the body and its solubility.
