Grotteria is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Reggio Calabria in the Italian region Calabria, located about southwest of Catanzaro and about northeast of Reggio Calabria. The local economy, once based on agriculture and shepherdry, has slowed due to emigration, which shrank the population from 9,242 in 1951 to about 3,380. Martone ( Calabrian: ) is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Reggio Calabria, Calabria, in southern Italy. Its origins date back to between the 7th and 8th centuries. The founders were Greek monks from the Byzantine Orient who made a deep impression on the social-economic fabric of the region. The monks travelled from Cappadocia, Syria, Palestine, Libya, Egypt, and Greece proper, chased by Syrian persecution, to find refuge in Sicily and Calabria. For the monks the locality must have been the ideal ambience, being an isolated place far from worldly passions, suitable for the ascetic life of prayer, study, meditation and work. It is likely that the area has been inhabited since prehistoric times when cave-dwellers lived there. Galatro
Galatro () is a ''comune'' (municipality) in the Province of Reggio Calabria in the Italy, Italian region Calabria, located about southwest of Catanzaro and about northeast of Reggio Calabria. As of 31 December 2004 it had a population of 2,077 and an area of . Located in a very beautiful area of Calabria, it is home to a renowned Spa where treatments are carried out.
