Arthur Grote (29 November 1814 – 4 December 1886) was an English colonial administrator. Life He was born on 29 November 1814 at Beckenham in Kent, England. He was the son of George Grote (1760–1830), a London banker, and Selina Peckwell (1775-1845) who was the daughter of the Rev. Dr Henry Peckwell (1747-1787) and Bella Blosset of Co. Meath, from a well-connected Huguenot family. His elder brother George Grote (1794–1871) became a distinguished politician and historian of Greece. He was educated at Haileybury College, and entered the Bengal Civil Service in 1834, where as a civil servant he was employed in Bengal from 1834 to 1868 and was commissioner and member of the Board of Revenue, Calcutta, 1861–8. Born in Oberfrohna, Grote was from 1926 to 1935 organist and choir director of the Bach-Verein (Bach association) in Wuppertal, which later was named ''Wupperfelder Kantorei'' (Wupperfeld chorale). From 1935 he was director of the Spandauer Kirchenmusikschule (Spandau school of church music. Grote also became a professor at the Berlin Conservatory. Harriet Grote (1792–1878) was an English biographer. She was married to George Grote and was acquatined with many of the English philosophical radicals of the earlier 19th century. A longterm friend described her as "absolutely unconventional". Background Her father, Thomas Lewin (1753–1837) spent some years in the Madras civil service. He returned to Europe, travelling from Pondicherry in a ship with Madame Grand. Lewin remained with her for a time in Paris in the 1780s. While serving as a director of a sisal plantation in German East Africa, he published papers on the local avifauna (from 1909 to 1913). Gerald Wayne Grote (born October 6, 1942) is an American former professional baseball player. He played the majority of his Major League Baseball career as a catcher for the New York Mets, catching every inning of the franchise's first two World Series appearances, and would appear in two more World Series for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was a two-time All-Star for the National League and is regarded as one of the best defensive catchers of his era. Early life Grote was raised in San Antonio, Texas. College career Grote, a 6'4 guard from Cantwell High School in Montebello, California, played collegiately at Loyola University in Los Angeles (now Loyola Marymount). Grote made a splash in his first year of eligibility, averaging 14.2 points and 6.7 rebounds per game and winning West Coast Athletic Conference player of the year honors as a sophomore.
