Greenough Road Board
The Greenough Road District was an early form of local government area in the Mid West region of Western Australia. It was based in the town of Greenough. It was established on 24 January 1871, and was originally a much larger district, including much of the future Shire of Murchison and Shire of Mullewa areas. The Murchison Road District was separated from the Greenough district on 3 August 1875 and the Mullewa Road District was separated on 11 August 1911. The road board built a permanent one-room stone office in Gregory Road, Greenough in 1906; the building survives today and is heritage-listed. Local Government Areas Of Western Australia
There are 137 local government areas of Western Australia (LGAs), which are areas, towns and districts in Western Australia that manage their own affairs to the extent permitted by the ''Local Government Act 1995''. The ''Local Government Act 1995'' also makes provision for regional local governments (referred to as "regional councils", established by two or more local governments for a particular purpose. Mid West (Western Australia)
The Mid West region is one of the nine regions of Western Australia. It is a sparsely populated region extending from the west coast of Western Australia, about north and south of its administrative centre of Geraldton, Western Australia, Geraldton and inland to east of Wiluna, Western Australia, Wiluna in the Gibson Desert. It has a total area of , and a permanent population of about 52,000 people, more than half of those in Geraldton. Greenough, Western Australia
Greenough is a historical settlement situated in a floodplain (the Greenough Flats) 400 kilometres north of Perth, Western Australia and 24 kilometres south of Geraldton on the Brand Highway. The settlement's historical buildings are mostly built of local limestone and date to the second half of the 19th century. A sizeable collection of these are owned and managed by the National Trust of Australia. A remarkable feature of the Greenough Flats is its windswept trees, some of which are bent 90 degrees due to the prevailing coastal winds. The mouth of the Greenough River is about 10 km to the north of the town. Shire Of Murchison
The Shire of Murchison covers a large area of the Murchison sub-region of the central part of Western Australia, northeast of Geraldton. The shire and the older 'Murchison' region and goldfield are now part of the designated Mid West region. It is Australia's second least populated local government area and the only one without a town. Description The Shire of Murchison incorporates 29 pastoral stations and a population of 114. Most properties are operated by family units with their main income from cattle, meat sheep and wool, with some goats. A small tourism industry is developing in the region with some stations involved in station stays and with the Murchison Oasis Caravan Park and motel units located at the settlement providing facilities for tourists. Shire Of Mullewa
The Shire of Mullewa was a local government area in the Mid West region of Western Australia, about east of the city of Geraldton and about north of the state capital, Perth. The Shire covered an area of , and its seat of government was the town of Mullewa. It amalgamated with the City of Geraldton-Greenough on 1 July 2011 to become part of the City of Greater Geraldton. History The Mullewa Road District was constituted on 11 August 1911, and on 1 July 1961, it became a shire under the ''Local Government Act 1960''. Amalgamation Throughout 2010 and 2011, negotiations were held between the City of Geraldton-Greenough and the Shire of Mullewa as to whether the two entities should merge. The ''Geraldton Express'' was a newspaper established in Geraldton, Western Australia It was founded in 1878. Patrick Stone
Patrick Stone (14 March 1854 – 23 December 1926) was a Member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 1901 to 1904, and from 1905 to 1908. Born in Buncrana in Inishowen, County Donegal, Ireland, on 14 March 1854, Patrick Stone was the eldest son of army private James Stone and Ann Dorothy née Doherty. His father had served in the British Army in India and Afghanistan and after being wounded there had been invalided back to Britain where he married. When the British government agreed to transport convicts to Western Australia, James elected to become part of the Enrolled Pensioner Guard, guarding the convicts on their voyage to Western Australia. Patrick traveled with his parents and younger brother James on board the convict transport ''William Hammond'', arriving in Western Australia in April 1856. John Stephen Maley
John Stephen Maley (5 April 1839 – 28 December 1910) was a pioneering settler of the Mid West region of Western Australia. He was known for his engineering prowess. Life Maley was born in Albany, Western Australia, to Martha Mary (née Goodchild) and Kennedy Maley. His parents were both immigrants, his father from Northern Ireland and his mother from Hampshire, England. After leaving school, Maley moved to Perth and became an apprentice to Solomon Cook, an American-born engineer. He helped Cook on a number of projects, including several bridge-building projects, and also worked on Cook's primitive steam ferries on the Swan River. Maley also assisted Richard Jewell with his rebuilding of The Causeway, which was the main river crossing in Perth at the time. He caused a stir at the official opening ceremony in 1867, interrupting the speech of the governor, John Hampton, and galloping over the bridge on horseback in order to be the first across. Henry Maley
Henry Kennedy Maley (17 June 1878 – 26 February 1956) was an Australian politician who was a Country Party member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia from 1917 to 1924 and again from 1929 to 1930. He was the state leader of the Country Party from 1922 to 1923, and a minister in the government of Sir James Mitchell from 1921 to 1924. Early life Maley was born in Greenough, Western Australia, to Elizabeth (née Waldeck) and John Stephen Maley. He attended the High School in Perth on a scholarship, and after leaving began working as a clerk for the Midland Railway Company. After two years, he moved to Kalgoorlie and was employed by a mining syndicate. During the Boer War, Maley served with the West Australian Mounted Infantry. He took over his father's farm in Greenough after the war's end, and also owned land in Three Springs from 1907 to 1913 (in partnership with his brothers). It is affiliated with the National Party of Australia but maintains a separate structure and identity. Since the 2021 state election, the Nationals WA is the senior party in an opposition alliance with the WA Liberal Party in the WA Parliament.
